Have you received a letter from the Commission?

The Charity Commission for Northern Ireland is this week writing to over 250 charitable organisations, in preparation for work to begin on phasing out what is known as the “combined list”.

If you are one of those organisations, the questions and answers below may provide additional information to that contained within the letter. You can also find out further information on what the combined list is and the Commission’s plans here.

  1. Why did the Commission write to me?

We wrote to you because we hold your name as the contact for the organisation named on the letter. We received your information from HMRC when registration of charities was being introduced.

  1. I am no longer connected to this organisation. The contact details are wrong – how did this happen?

Sometimes when we send out emails and letters, we find the contact person is no longer with the organisation. Please accept our apologies. If you still have a contact with the charity, we would be grateful if you would forward this letter to them.

  1. I was never connected to this organisation – why did you write to me?

Please accept our apologies for any inconvenience. We received your information from HMRC when registration of charities was being introduced. Please ignore this letter.

  1. I would like to request to remove contact details from Commission records.

Individuals have the right to have their personal data erased under UK GDPR in certain circumstances. Your contact details were provided to the Commission by HMRC as the contact for the organisation. As the information was disclosed by law and is required for the Commission to perform its functions, you may not have the right to erasure at this time. However, if you are no longer involved with this charity, or your name was provided in error, then it may be possible.

If you wish to make a formal application to have your personal data erased please email: admin@charitycommissionni.org.uk

  1. My organisation has received a letter but has already applied for registration, is already registered or has closed. What should I do next?

Thank you for letting us know. Please ignore this letter.
