Northern Ireland’s Charity Commissioners will reflect on the ongoing successes and challenges of implementing charity regulation, at the Charity Commission for Northern Ireland’s annual public meeting 2016.

Members of the public are invited to attend this event, which will be held on Monday 19 September 2016, from 3pm to 5pm (registration opens at 2.30pm), at the Island Arts Centre, The Island, Lisburn, BT27 4RL.

The meeting will provide an opportunity to find out more about the role and work of the Commission, ask questions and share your views on charity regulation, as well as meet Northern Ireland’s seven Charity Commissioners.

Chief Charity Commissioner, Tom McGrath (pictured, below), commented: “It has been just over seven years since legislation establishing Northern Ireland’s Charity Commission was commenced in March 2009.

“Much has changed in that time, with charity registration and annual reporting for registered charities now well underway, opening up new ways for the public to undertake vital checks on charities.

“Our public meeting is an ideal opportunity to find out more about our progress so far, our plans for the future and how our work is impacting not only charities, but also their supporters, beneficiaries and funders.

The Commission is delighted to announce that renowned legal expert and author, Dr Oonagh Breen, will be the guest lecturer at the 2016 public meeting.

A senior lecturer in law at University College Dublin, and a frequent contributor at international events on charity law reform, Dr Breen will speak on the topic What does good governance in a charity look like?

Notes to editors

The Charity Commission for Northern Ireland is the independent regulator of charities in Northern Ireland, established under the Charities Act (Northern Ireland) 2008.

A non-departmental public body, the Commission is sponsored by the Department for Communities and has a number of legal functions where it uses powers similar to those of the High Court.
