The Charity Commission for Northern Ireland will hold its annual public meeting on Thursday, 22 January 2026, from 10.30am to 12.30pm (registration opens at 10am) at Malone House, Barnett Demesne, Belfast, BT9 5PB.
Sector leaders, charity representatives and members of the public are invited to attend this free event and join the discussion on charity regulation. Attendees will:
- hear updates on the Commission’s work and future plans.
- gain insights into key issues affecting charities, including banking challenges and financial resilience.
- learn from keynote speaker Matthew Smith, renowned barrister, on managing internal conflicts - a vital topic for all charities.
- engage directly with Northern Ireland’s Chief Charity Commissioner Gerard McCurdy, Chief Executive Frances McCandless and senior staff.
Chief Commissioner, Mr McCurdy, described the meeting as a unique chance for charities and the public to learn more about charity regulation and share their views on the issues shaping the sector.
“Our public meeting is an important opportunity for us to listen to the sector and share how we are working to support and regulate charities,” he said.
“We are also delighted to have secured Matthew Smith as our keynote speaker. His legal expertise and experience will provide practical tips and insights for charities navigating complex governance challenges.
“I am looking forward to an engaging and thought-provoking session and would encourage everyone with an interest in charities to join us.”

The Charity Commission for Northern Ireland is the independent regulator of charities in Northern Ireland, established under the Charities Act (Northern Ireland) 2008.
A non-departmental public body, the Commission is sponsored by the Department for Communities and has a number of legal functions where it uses powers similar to those of the High Court.
