Annual public meeting - 31 January 2024

As well as offering an opportunity to catch up on the work and plans of the charity regulator, the Commission's annual public meeting will have a cyber-crime theme this year.

With online crime regularly hitting the headlines, the theme has been chosen as one which is of particular interest to the sector as they look for advice on how best to protect their organisations and keep updated on the latest trends, issues and legislation.

This means attendees will not only benefit from learning about the Commission's work and hear advice based on learning from the cases the regulator has dealt with but will also hear from guest speakers who have their fingers on the pulse of information rights and law.

Amongst the guest speakers will be Sam Kinkaid (pictured above), a Detective with 27 years service who, for the last nine years, has been based with the Police Service of Northern Ireland Cyber Crime Centre. Having dealt with cyber related investigations such as insider threats, network intrusions and ransomware, Sam has been the Regional Cyber Protect Officer and a member of the UK Cyber Protect police team. Working with a number of external partners, Sam engages with local organisations and victims of cybercrime, raising staff awareness of current threats and providing advice and guidance on how both individuals and organisations can better protect themselves against common attacks.

Jessica McClements, Head of Technical Content for the Northern Ireland Cyber Security Centre (NICSC) will be speaking alongside Sam, providing guidance on issues such as how to back up your data and installing the latest updates across all the charity's devices. The NICSC works to support small to medium sized organisations and charities to be cyber safe, secure and resilient. You can read their small charity guide online here.

In addition, Simon Beattie, a Senior Policy Officer at the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) will be highlighting good practice in information rights.

The public meeting will take place from 9.30am to 12.30pm on Wednesday, 31 January 2024 at Riddel Hall, Belfast. Open to the public, the event is free of charge and you can book your place by emailing events@charitycommissionni.org.uk
