Commission initiative offers extra support for charities

A new initiative to help charities dealing with governance or operational challenges is being piloted by the Charity Commission for Northern Ireland.

The Call for Volunteers scheme is designed to connect charities with individuals who can offer practical skills and hands-on support. This provides trustees with valuable assistance as they work to implement Commission guidance and recommendations. At the same time, it can help strengthen the charity’s governance and improve its day-to-day administration.

The scheme could be particularly useful for charities that have already worked with the Commission and are now trying to make improvements, or for those who just need a bit more support to get governance improvements over the line.

However, while hopeful the pilot scheme will prove a success, the Commission continues to encourage charities to first make use of their existing networks and connections, including established supports such as helper groups, which can provide tailored and ongoing assistance. The Call for Volunteers initiative is intended to complement, not replace, these supports. It is best suited to organisations that have already explored other avenues but require additional capacity to move forward.
