Public benefits
The direct benefits that flow from purpose (i) are: (a) increased numbers of people participating in music, among those who have previously found access difficult, because of disability and resulting financial hardship. (b) benefits for individual participants, including the development of musical skills and expertise, the development of the
appreciation, enjoyment and understanding of music and the enjoyment of making music with others. (c) additional recognised non-musical benefits of musical activity for participants, including improvements in well-being, communication skills, emotional regulation, self confidence and self image. The direct benefits that flows from purpose (ii) are: (a) an increase in skills for teachers delivering musical activities for those with disability/additional needs and/or mental health wellbeing needs and a resulting increase in the range and quality of provision of music education to such people. Benefits will be evidenced in a number of different ways: (i) improved access will be measured by increased demand for services and provision of services to a greater number of people over a wider area of Northern Ireland. (ii) the development of individuals’ musical skills will be evidenced by the use of the nationally recognised Sounds of Intent assessment tool (soundsofintent.org) or by traditional music “grade” exams. (iii) other personal development benefits will be assessed by feedback from service users, RiChmusicNI tutors, family members or carers and, where relevant, school teachers who are involved in the care of the pupil concerned. (iv) the training of tutors will incorporate an assessment tool. There is little risk of harm caused by these purposes, and this would be significantly outweighed by benefits. Musical involvement does cause mood change and while this is almost always positive, mood regulation during sessions will be carefully monitored. Sound levels will also be monitored, particularly as some participants have an enhanced sensitivity to louder sounds. Use of musical instruments will be monitored closely by staff. All instruments provided will be safety checked before distribution. The direct benefit from the purposes will be for children and adults with disability/additional needs and/or mental health well-being needs in Northern Ireland. There will be an indirect benefit for their family members and/or carers and for wider society. There is no private benefit arising from RiChmusicNI’s purposes.
