Public benefits

The direct benefit which flows from The Glenelly Player’s purposes involves the promotion of health and wellbeing, enhanced community relations, community teamwork and a portal to participation in the arts and drama either through involvement with productions or through attendance in the audience. The drama group and performances promote social

interaction in a rural area which reduces social isolation. It is acknowledged that the members of the group participate in the group to give something back to the local community and to inspire others to break down barriers such as age, background, fear of performing. The enthusiasm and energy of the group has created a sense of community purpose and pride within the local community. In the lead up to a performance, there is a great sense of anticipation as the community flocks to purchase tickets. The feel-good factor in the community encourages people to come back again and look forward to new productions and new casts. The group provides an outlet for people to participate in and learn about different aspects of drama, from script reading to direction, lighting, production of the set and allows members of the group to gain invaluable skills and experience in the field of drama. The further benefit is that people can participate in arts and drama locally and can experience drama festivals and theatre productions. An incidental benefit is that the group donates the proceeds of ticket sales to charities supporting health/saving lives, the arts and education. To date the group has made donations of over £35,000.00. The group’s performances to date are a mix of comedy and reflect the lighter side of life and provide genuine entertainment for the community. Since its genesis in 2004, tickets for productions have sold out and this demonstrates the public benefit. Demand for tickets exceeds the number of seats available and feedback from the community is positive. The audience is drawn from across the area of benefit and people are inspired to join the group in some capacity. Since its resurrection following the pandemic, the group has attracted new members. The audience follow the players locally and travel to theatres further afield to see the group's play. Following performances there is a huge demand for digital recordings of the performances. There is no anticipated harm flowing from the group's purpose. The beneficiaries are the people of the Glenelly Valley County Tyrone and the surrounding areas. There is no private benefit to any of the trustees of the charity.

What your organisation does

The Glenelly Players encourage people from the local areas to become involved in performing plays and drama .The productions are normally showcased in Cranagh Hall or Plumbridge Hall in the heart of the Glenelly Valley,,but the group embraced the opportunity a few years ago to stage a play at the Alley Theatre Strabane and The Riverside Theatre

Coleraine. The experience enhanced the knowledge and skills of the cast and production team in terms of how stage production operates in a more formal environment in front of a larger audience. The performances also attracted a large number of people from The Glenelly Valley and surrounding areas who travelled to support the performances. The demands of putting on a production, requires encouraging and inviting the local community to participate. Many roles are involved from administration to joinery, lighting, reading of scripts, organisation of a box office for ticket sales , marketing of the drama productions through local newspapers and social media. There is also the need for traffic marshalling and front of house roles on the evenings of the performances and this requires efficient teamwork and enhances community spirit. Ticket sales are donated to a number of charities which promote its purpose of advancing health/saving lives and promoting the arts. The Group also facilitate visits to drama and theatre productions in other areas. To date the group have attended local drama festivals in the surrounding areas and have attended performances in The Grand Opera House Belfast, local theatres and theatres in London.
