Public benefits

TUSR is an entirely voluntary group of skilled personnel who constantly train to improve our ability to respond on a 24/7/365 basis to the general public who may be lost, injured or in danger in water. We maintain equipment to enable us to carry out effective underwater searches to relieve distress. We work with a wide range of partners including

the PSNI, Coastguard, Lough Neagh Rescue (LNR), NIAS, NIF&RS and others to provide a professional service to people who enjoy the outdoors.TUSR provides an essential support role to the emergency services in times of crisis.TUSR provides an important role in ensuring recovery of loved ones following their loss in water which helps alleviate distress for families.TUSR develops, delivers and advances educational materials, presentations, lectures and talks to inform and educate the public in all matters relating to inland water safety and awareness, waterborne rescue, first aid and the safe and appropriate use of outdoor environments. These benefits are demonstrated through feedback from emergency services, beneficiaries and families of beneficiaries and attendees at our meetings, events, classes, and activities using: evaluation forms, surveys, verbal feedback, and reports and evaluations of our services and activities. In providing a local point of social contact and activities for the community benefit there is no possibility of harm out weighing the benefit - there is no harm arising from any of the purposes. The charity’s beneficiaries are primarily the inhabitants of Tyrone and the surrounding environs within the Dungannon and South Tyrone area of Mid Ulster District Council. TUSR can also provide assistance across Northern Ireland and the northern counties as required. A private benefit to Trustees may arise from the training that is provided to all volunteers.Through this, Trustees gain skills and experience which are transferable to other settings, and which may benefit their own community group or area. Our own Trustees receive information, services and activities in the same way as other beneficiaries, and are assigned support, information and services in the same ways as other beneficiaries. These benefits are incidental and necessary to ensure the benefit is provided to our beneficiaries.

What your organisation does

Tyrone Underwater Search & Recovery works principally in the Tyrone, Dungannon and South Tyrone area and its surrounding rural environs but also can provide assistance across Northern Ireland and the northern counties as required. TUSR is an independent voluntary underwater search and recovery organisation providing and maintaining a suitably

trained specialist underwater search and recovery team, equipment, vehicles and vessels to assist in the search and recovery of persons missing or endangered by accidents or natural hazards in the area of benefit and adjacent land both independently and in association with the full emergency services and other statutory and voluntary aid agencies. The Group provides direct to support the emergency services; police, ambulance, fire service, Lough Neagh Rescue and coastguard to provide specialist underwater search and recovery services across the area of benefit. The Group works closely with families to support the recovery of a loved one. The Committee meets every month to run the charity, help raise funds for the Group and to provide on-going training for volunteers. On average we respond to approximately 15 emergency calls per year in all weather conditions and detailed statistics are maintained of all our operations.
