Public benefits
The principal benefit of our scheme is the provision, to people having life-threatening emergencies in our catchment area, of resuscitation, basic medical care & support while the ambulance is en route. It is therefore vital that we arrive at the patient’s side quickly, fully trained & equipped. Other benefits include airway management, liaison
with ambulance control and clinical advisers, reassurance that we are trained to deal with emergencies pending the arrival of the ambulance and alleviation of the high levels of fear and anxiety felt by many patients and their families/significant others and bystanders. The benefits are identified by: Our CFRs record return of spontaneous circulation from cardiac arrest on their patient report forms (PRFs). NIAS provides data on survival to hospital admission & discharge. CFRs also record outcomes/actions such as removal of airway obstructions, & airway protection for unconscious patients. We measure response times from NIAS alert & CFR activation to arrival at the scene, using the NIAS time stamp & the CFR's activation & arrival messages on our WhatsApp operations chat. Responding CFRs use WhatsApp to self-manage the numbers of responders arriving at the scene: no more than three for a Category 2 incident or four for a Category 1. We analyse these data monthly & report back to our volunteers on activity & performance. There is no harm that we are aware of. The beneficiaries are the patients we care for and their loved ones. There is no private benefit.

Our volunteer community first responders are trained and alerted by the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service to life threatening medical emergencies including cardiac arrest, chest pain, diminished consciousness, diabetic emergencies, drowning or choking, simultaneously with the NIAS professional responders. Braid Valley Community First Responders
raise the money for, purchase and manage response kits, including automated external defibrillators, for each responder. Dalriada Urgent Care Ltd supplies our defibrillator pads and NIAS our other consumables. We are alerted to an average of 45-50 emergencies per month. Because we are local to our tightly drawn catchment, we are able to arrive before NIAS in up to 90% of cases. Our catchment area is Ballymena, Broughshane and Kells and their rural hinterlands.
