Public benefits

To do all things as may be indicated or conducive to the attainment of the above objects or any of them by: - Organising dairy, beef and sheep farm visits to discuss improvements in grass production and animal production efficiency. During these visits there is the opportunity to see at first-hand how farmers are incorporating the latest

technological changes into their grassland systems so that attendees can learn and take home messages to make improvements to their management on the home farm. - Facilitating annual conference that is held in late January with eminent speakers from both the local and national scene. It provides the opportunity of keeping up to date with changes in the industry with an eye to the practical implications and it also provides a forum for research workers to review and discuss their current work. - A Grassland Competition is held annually and is open to all current Ulster Grassland Society members and those who hope to join. It allows entrants to benchmark their grassland system against other UGS members. - Encourage the investigation of problems pertaining to grassland husbandry through liaising with the local agricultural college and research stations. Collect and publish information relating to grassland husbandry: to print and publish any periodicals, books and leaflets which the society may think desirable. - As a major representative body for Northern Ireland Farming to reply to government consultations on future agriculture policies. • Special members rate for conferences and events • Receive the BGS Grass and Forage Manager Magazine – four issues per year. • To enter the UGS Grassland Farmer of the Year competition • To vote at an Annual General Meeting. • Students attending Agricultural Colleges can become members of the Ulster Grassland Society free of charge during their time at Agricultural College. This provides further learning opportunities for agricultural students. • A family member under the age of twenty-five has a reduced rate for attending conferences and events. • The Ulster Grassland Society provides the opportunity of a student bursary to one Ag Tech degree student per annum to help with the cost of their studies and to give them an insight into the running of the organisation. These benefits are demonstrated by: • Number of members attending conferences and events. • Number of agricultural students attending events. • All members receive the BGS Grass and Forage Manager Magazine. • Number of family members under the age of twenty-five attending events. • Number of students applying for one-year bursary. • Feedback from those attending conferences and events. • One student per year receiving the Ulster Grassland Society Bursary. • The winner of the Ulster Grassland Society Grassland, Farmer of the Year Competition, and runners-up. There is no harm arising from the purposes. There may be incidental benefits for neighbouring farmers of members gaining knowledge from UGS members who have attend events and the Annual Conference.

The society is established to: To encourage the adoption into farming practice of advances resulting from grassland research, experimental work and practical experience. To provide opportunities for those interested in and concerned with grassland husbandry to meet and exchange information, ideas and experiences relating to all aspects of the

management, production and utilization of grass. To encourage the investigation of problems pertaining to grassland husbandry. To collect and publish information relating to grassland husbandry: to print and publish any periodicals, books and leaflets which the society may think desirable.To co-operate with any other organisation in furthering any of the objects of the society. To make and frame such regulations and byelaws as may be considered necessary for the conduct of the society and the attainments of its objects. To admit to membership of the society persons concerned with or interested in the objects of the society.
