Public benefits

The benefits which flow from our organisation's purpose include improved relationships between home and school; the availability of funding for additional resources for the school; and links built with the local community. This is demonstrated through having an active PFA that works in partnership with the school and engages parental support.

Resources and fundraising by the PFA enhances the educational experience of the children & young people in Holywood Steiner School. The benefit which flows from this purpose includes increased educational progress and attainment of pupils in the school and links built with the local community. This is demonstrated through pupils having access to resources, events, activities and links with the local community which are not available through direct school funding. Holywood Steiner School does not receive direct school funding and its only income is through fees and project specific funding programmes. Working with the staff and school trustees, the PFA are instrumental in the delivery of relevant objectives within 'Strategy 2025'. The direct benefits which flow from our purpose include, social events which promote good relations between staff, teachers, parents & carers and the wider community to help new pupils settle into school and get to know people. For example monthly parent & carer coffee mornings; family meet-ups; social events; Seasonal Fair’s within the school open to the wider community. The application of PFA funds in support of advancing educational opportunities for the school & wider community such as fundraising for a defibrillator which is also accessible to the wider community as well as defibrillator & First Aid training to students; Fundraising to provide trips to enhance educational opportunities (trip to a Viking settlement exhibition for children); the provision of sporting equipment through fundraising (new basketball court and nets) to benefit all children in the school, which otherwise would not have been possible. No harm arises from either purposes. The benefit is for children at Holywood Steiner School, parents & carers, pupils, their siblings and wider family circle, teaching staff and families, ancillary staff and families and to the general public within the wider community of the school. Charity trustees (PFA committee members) are also parents & carers at the school which their children attend and hence gain benefit in the same way as all other beneficiaries. This benefit is incidental and necessary to ensure the benefit is provided to all beneficiaries. The trustees maintain that it is necessary to ensure these benefits are provided to all beneficiaries on an incidental basis. No private benefit flows from any of the purposes. The benefit is for children at Holywood Steiner School. Charity trustees (PFA committee members) are also parents & carers at the school which their children attend and hence gain benefit in the same way as all other beneficiaries. This benefit is incidental and necessary to ensure the benefit is provided to all beneficiaries.

What your organisation does

The Holywood Steiner School Parents & Friends Association (HSSPFA/The PFA) fulfills its purpose by fostering better relationships and communication between parents, carers, teachers, staff, and the wider community. Since its foundation, the PFA has met every six weeks and organized monthly parent and carer coffee mornings, as well as hosted various

events. To ensure meaningful engagement, the PFA established Parent Class Representatives from each year group, from preschool and kindergarten through to Class 11, offering a direct line of communication with parents and carers. We have also aligned a calendar of fundraising events with the school year, raising essential funds for resources. These events have included celebrations, fairs, social gatherings, and parent quizzes. We have actively involved the wider community by publicizing and opening our events, fostering greater engagement and raising awareness of the school. Additionally, we contribute a dedicated section in the school’s quarterly newsletter to keep parents and carers informed of our work. The Holywood Steiner School does not receive government funding, relying solely on fees and project-specific grants. The PFA has worked closely with staff and the board of trustees to support the school’s strategic goals by raising funds and providing resources. More details on Holywood Steiner School's strategic objectives, including 'Strategy 2025' and the 'Giving Strategy,' can be found in the supplementary documentation of this application.
