Public benefits
The increased mental and physical wellbeing of men in the area, their spouses and families and the improvement in broader community relations locally. By our increasing membership and the success of our projects to date. As we are still a fledgling organisation, we hope in the future to evidence these benefits through feedback from our members and
the wider community in Burren. No The beneficiaries are primarily the men who join our group, but also their families and the wider community. Our members are mainly retired men from a rural area who are at risk of social isolation and poor mental health. Our group brings these men together in a spirit of friendship and cooperation and helps provide a focus for their energies and interests. Our community has benefitted many times already from our Men's Shed community clean-ups, floral displays in public spaces, wild flower/pollinators project and tree planting. No
... [more] [less]What your organisation does
Most of our men are retired and several are quite elderly. Social isolation is potentially a major issue in their lives. By providing a safe and welcoming space where men feel comfortable to come together to work on a project can be a lifeline to many. As our Men’s Shed is open to any man aged eighteen and over, there are great opportunities for
inter-generational mixing and new friendships. The old pass on their knowledge and stories to the younger members, while the younger men can inject some energy and up-to-date knowledge. Men do not talk face to face, they talk shoulder to shoulder. By facilitating projects for the men to get stuck into, we are actually encouraging dialogue, confidence-building, personal development and mental well-being. All our projects' main objectives will be to improve the appearance, amenity and environment of our village to the benefit of all.
