Public benefits

The Direct Benefit flowing from this will be a safe space where the local community can meet where their different activities can be pursued without prejudice and through this a closer relationship within the local community. An historic landmark will be preserved along with the heritage of a mixed graveyard. The Direct Benefit flowing from this

is that we have conducted surveys of the local population who are combined in their wish for closer relationship within the community who have also supported us in trying to restore the building so that it may be used by them for social and other activities. The Direct Benefit flowing from Cloughey Heritage group's purpose will not cause any harm, but rather benefit to the community and associated groups. The Direct Benefit flowing from this will be the people of Cloughey and district, the descendants of Cloughey and district and the descendants of people buried in the graveyard with their heritage being explored. There is no private benefit flowing from the actions of the Cloughey Heritage Group.

What your organisation does

The original purpose of forming the Group was to prevent a very well known Landmark building ( former church built 1841) , and its surrounding attended graveyard situated in the heart of the village of Cloughey between the Main Road and the large beach, falling into a state of disrepair and dilapidation. With the intention of having a heritage room

within the refurbished building, to display the local historical items of interest such as photos of the Life Boat station, the local Kirkistown Castle, growth of the church. We meet every month to discuss and progress the project. Following Public meetings and newspaper articles about the building, the local community agreed that other viable uses should be considered, such as a Youth Club,[ with for instance badminton, table tennis, pool table, tuck shop], IT Suite, Keep Fit class, Mothers & Toddlers Group, Gardening Club in the long curtilage of the site, Art Class, Birthday party venue, Musical events, Dancing Class, Young Farmers meeting, Mini Cinema using balcony pews, with a Cafe on a new first floor extension to the rear of the building, taking advantage of the magnificent views over the large crescent Blue Flag beach and bay. Bearing in mind that the village does not have an open to all Community Hall, nor cafe. [ compared to Kircubbin 5 miles up the Ards peninsula which has at least three successful cafes and restaurants ] . Therefore the vision would be to bring more life and vitality into a rather quiet seaside village, for the benefit of the many teenagers and older folk on the various days and evenings of the week. We have had meetings where we carried out surveys, trying to build a picture of what is really needed. At the start of 2020 there was an application made to the Architectural Fund to see if the building could be Listed. We have been successful in obtaining this in 2022 along with a small feasibility grant which we had to match fund. The success of this has resulted in a further grant offer.
