Public benefits
Improvements in educational attainment among young people who are struggling in mainstream education in the Derry city area through various steeping stone training programmes which lead to young people re engaging/accessing higher education and gain employment. Through our volunteering opportunities young people also gain skills, confidence and a
sense of achievement and increased social interaction amongst the beneficiaries by attending weekly activities/sessions and having the opportunity of additional support of networking with peers who have similar experiences. The direct benefits flowing from the provision of recreational activities alongside a drop in style access to our premises includes an enhanced health, both physically and mentally among young people suffering from the effects of coming from a disadvantaged background. Young people from disadvantaged backgrounds can develop a greater sense of community spirit and citizenship therefore creating a reduction in Anti-social behaviour as a direct result of the positive work being carried out with the young people. Working in partnership with relevant statutory and voluntary organisations enable us to provide a professional and accountable youth provision. Participants also experience a sense of belonging in their community as well as becoming actively engaged in voluntary charity work. All the above benefits can be demonstrated through participants voluntary attendance (attendance records) at our facility/programmes/activities (accredited/non accredited) as well as feedback from participants/family/community via the regular internal/external evaluation of our programmes and services. Our work provides a platform for Local young people and adults who wish to pursue a career in Youth work, evidenced via the vast numbers who reengage with education following their experience with Derry Search. We believe that our links with the statutory/voluntary sector leads to more effective community activity enabling young people to deliver more benefits to their community. These benefits can be demonstrated by the increased knowledge and capacity of our participants who then become a more efficient and effective member of the wider society. There is no harm flowing from any of our purposes. The beneficiaries is initially our membership of young people which in turn provides benefit to their local communities/families within the Derry City Area. There is no private benefit flowing from any of our purposes, However, we acknowledge there could be some personal or private benefit derived by individuals (e.g. instance if training helps an individual to find a job/get back into education) these benefits are incidental to the wider benefit to the public.

Using a person-centred holistic approach, the core founding principle of the project is faith exploration and the development of spirituality in young people. Young people are encouraged to talk about spirituality; it’s relevance in their lives, whilst encouraging participants to make healthy decisions in all aspects of their lives Spirituality as
defined by the mental health foundation “….the emotional and spiritual resilience which allows us to enjoy life and survive pain, disappointment and sadness. It is a positive sense of well-being and an underlying belief in our own and others’ dignity and worth.” Derry search Youth Group is a youth work organisation that specialises in reaching out to disengaged 11-25-year olds who have low self-worth and self-esteem who are at risk of engaging in anti-social behaviour and dropping out of education. We also engage and support various cross community programmes via our partnership with Youth initiatives (YI) in a Peace IV funded programme ‘Transform’. We aim to awaken hope, inspire initiative and mobilise young people to make a vital contribution to their local community. Derry Search Youth groups’ charitable object is to, without discrimination; promote the physical, mental, spiritual and social welfare of disadvantaged young people in Derry and beyond through education, youth work and volunteering. Our youth worker and volunteers engage over 1000 young people on a yearly basis through our 10 youth work projects in some of the most deprived housing estates in Northern Ireland. Far from trying quick fix methods, Derry Search’s youth work is long-term and preventative, tackling issues of poverty, inequality and sectarianism at its roots.
