Public benefits

The direct benefits flowing from the purpose of the advancement of amateur sport comprise the promotion and maintenance of health by enabling club members to take part in activities involving physical exertion , and the development of skills in the performance of the various disciplines of athletics in a safe and structured manner under the

guidance and coaching of qualified personnel, all of whom have been vetted in compliance with the safeguarding and health and safety regulations to which the club is signed up.The processes involved in the acquiring of these skills promote the development of a sense of self-worth and confidence in the athletes, and over the weeks, months and years the sense of individual identity is strengthened as confidence develops and bonds of friendships are established within the group and beyond ,all of which are of inestimable value, particularly where growing children are concerned. These benefits are demonstrated by the performance of the members in competition, initially within the club and later with athletes from other clubs. Proper training brings increased fitness levels, and coaching in the skills of the various events brings improved performance. Emphasis is on enjoyment and allowing individuals to progress at their own pace.Enjoyment and satisfaction in athletics come not only from winning, but also from measurably improved individual performance and the camaraderie that grows among people sharing the same interests and experiences. Participating in any sporting physical activity involves an element of risk, but this is mitigated by the fact that strict safety protocols are in place for all the various athletic disciplines (throwing, running and jumping}. Children are introduced to these rules at an early age, and at all age-levels they are strictly enforced and adhered to at coaching sessions and on days of competition by the coaches, officials and other volunteers. The risk of harm is thereby rendered minimal and is clearly outweighed by the benefits derived by the participants from each activity. The charity's beneficiaries are club members of all ages and from all walks of life in the Armagh area, many of whom have been attracted to the sport by witnessing the annual Armagh International Road Races organised by the club in the month of February. In many cases, children have joined first, and then their parents have become involved as volunteer helpers and then later have become members, joined in the training, have enjoyed it and before they know it they are taking part in athletic events themselves. Two of the 12 current trustees, who are long-serving coaches with the club, are also directors of a limited company selling sports gear and trophies. As this is the only business in Armagh providing engraved trophies and medals, the club often deals with it. Any financial benefit to the company is offset by its occasional sponsorship of sportswear and events organised by the club.

What your organisation does

The athletic club offers coaching and training programmes in those athletic disciplines for which we can provide equipment and facilities, and implements these with group coaching sessions, held weekly twice-weekly, or three-times weekly depending on the development level of the individuals concerned. These sessions are organised and run by our own

qualified coaches and assistant coaches, assisted by club volunteers, and on occasion by invited guest coaches. The athletes are thus prepared for competition which include in-house contests, as well as county, provincial and All-Ireland championships, and invitational events, including Road, Cross-country and Track & Field events promoted by Armagh AC. The juvenile athletes are brought to these events by their parents, or by appropriately vetted coaches and club officials. The adult athletes either make their own way to the various venues, or arrange group transport.
