Public benefits

[What are the direct benefits flowing from your organisation's purposes?] 1. Holding properties and investments in trust - The direct benefits which flow from this purpose include ensuring that the properties held by the Trust continue to be used as places of public worship in accordance with the principles of the Religious Society of Friends. The

benefits also include ensuring that investments of the constituent Meetings of the Society of Friends are held safely and securely in trust and are therefore available for use for the charitable purposes for which they are designated. 2. Managing charitable trusts - Two such trusts are currently held by Ulster Friends Trustees: a) James & Elizabeth Muriel Young Old People’s Home (JEMY OPH) Trust – this was originally a bequest which left an estate with the purpose of setting up a home for elderly members of the Society of Friends but which was changed by High Court Cy-Pres decision in 1998 to providing support for elderly members of the Religious Society of Friends, within Northern Ireland, who are in need of assistance with welfare, comfort and support. b) Jessie Cairns Bequest – this is a bequest made in 1982 and managed on behalf of Ulster Quarterly Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends with the objective of sustaining and extending the Christian witness of the Religious Society of Friends and supporting Quaker charitable work within the bounds of Ulster Quarterly Meeting. The direct benefits that flow from this purpose include the benefit of the improved welfare of those who receive assistance from the JEMY OPH Trust and the Christian witness, religious education and training and general charitable benefit [How can the benefits identified above be demonstrated?] 1. Holding properties and investments in trust - These benefits are demonstrated through the number of Members of our Meetings which at 31 December 2020 totaled just under 670 and a further 140 regular attenders. These members and attenders have benefited from our meeting houses and others in need have benefited from our charitable donations. 2. Managing charitable trusts - These benefits are demonstrated through annual reports provided to Ulster Quarterly Meeting in respect of both Funds. In 2020/21 around 180 members of the Religious Society of Friends, aged 60 years or over, received £67,500 in assistance towards comfort and welfare costs from the JEMY OPH Trust The purposes do not lead to any harm 1. Holding properties and investments in trust - The charity’s beneficiaries are anyone living in Northern Ireland who wishes to visit our Meeting Houses for public worship including both members of the Society of Friends and members of the general public. The beneficiaries also include all those who benefit from the income from the investments held in trust for Meetings of the Religious Society of Friends. 2. Managing charitable trusts - The beneficiaries of the JEMY OPH Trust are elderly members of the Society of Friends and their families. 2. Managing charitable trusts - The beneficiaries of the JEMY OPH Trust are elderly members of the Society of Friends and their families. The beneficiaries of the Jessie Cairns Bequest are members of the public in Northern Ireland who benefit from the Christian witness and charitable works of the Society of Friends. A private benefit flowing from the purpose of the JEMY OPH Trust is that it is restricted to elderly members of the Religious Society of Friends. However, membership of the Society is open to anyone who wishes to join. The benefits are incidental and necessary because of the stipulations of the bequest and the change in objects which was approved by the cy-pres agreement.
