Public benefits

What are the direct benefits flowing from the purposes? The direct benefits of the festival effect not just those interested in, and with a love of, drama through the opportunities for creativity, building practical skills and knowledge through participation or simply by allowing a wider variety of drama to be available to the Fermanagh audience.

There are direct benefits to the whole community. The Festival has been running annually since 1981 and has helped build community relations. Due to the creative nature of the Festival we cross all divides whether cultural, financial, religious, sexual or otherwise. The Festival provides an opportunity for people within Fermanagh and outside to individually, collectively and inclusively explore their differences in a safe, creative and innovative space. As a Festival we strive to support community relations and this is reflected in the makeup of our Committee and in our Festival programme. The Festival is part of the fabric of the community of Fermanagh and is an integral part of the cultural and creative identity and has been throughout times of political and economic uncertainty. The ethos of the Festival is to be inclusive and reflective of the creative talent within the community. We have made important steps to involve individuals with immense experience in the creative arts and across the whole age spectrum. Our committee has a wealth of talent and experience within the creative arts and reflects the demographics of our County. How can the above benefits be demonstrated? EDF promote and encourage high standards in theatre and the arts, allowing local groups to perform, as well as groups from throughout Ireland. The All-Ireland Champions regularly perform at the Festival giving the public the chance to see high quality theatre. The commitment to the festival of local businesses through sponsorship (9 sponsors – 1 per show) can be seen by three local businesses which have been sponsors for over a decade. The commitment of the audiences to the festival have seen an increase in attendance every year for the last 4 years. The commitment from performing groups can be seen by the number of applications received each year (25+ per year for 9 show slots), as well as the presence of 2 Fermanagh-based groups performing in 2020 (prior to the pandemic) and in 2019 one of these groups achieving 3rd place at the All-Ireland Confined final. The first Fermanagh-based group to reach an All-Ireland final for over a decade. Is there any harm arising from the purposes? No Who are the charity’s beneficiaries? The general public Is there any private benefit flowing from the purposes? Is it incidental and necessary? Some businesses, local and national, receive payment from the charity for services required to run and promote the festival. These benefits are incidental and necessary for the running of the festival.

What your organisation does

Enniskillen Drama Festival (EDF) participates in the All-Ireland Drama Festival Competition (one of 27 festivals across Ireland). EDF nominate to the All-Ireland Open & Confined Finals administered by the Amateur Drama Council of Ireland (ADCI) and also nominates to the Ulster Drama Festival Competition, administered by the Amateur Ulster Drama

Foundation (AUDF). EDF organises nine nights of performances in the Ardhowen Theatre in early-March each year and has done so for 40 years. Upwards of 30 entries are received each year from amateur drama groups from across Ireland, which are then required to be reduced to 9 performances. The Festival committee looks to ensure a varied selection of amateur drama as well as high class performances. The Festival allows the opportunity for creativity to blossom whether an individual is practically performing their skill or assisting (i.e. performance or production). The Festival allows the audience and those studying performing arts locally the opportunity to hear a professional adjudicator which expands their knowledge on the art of performance. The opportunity for audiences to observe a variety of performances in the Festival, expands creativity and appreciation among our local dramatic groups and audience.
