The Shed offers a safe space for men to meet and to share common interests as well as learning new skills. The benefits of purpose 2 include increased knowledge and awareness about

health & wellbeing through participation in workshops that address healthy lifestyle choices, and skills development through involvement in educational classes delivered in the community, and increased access to services that provide support in welfare advice, benefits, debt and money management. The direct benefit of purpose 3 is the provision of community facilities and equipment to carry out the objectives of the group. This includes the provision of indoor gym equipment and access to community gardens. The benefits from the purpose 1 are demonstrated through the number of beneficiaries that engage in the Men's Shed services and the improved health and wellbeing of said beneficiaries. The benefits from purpose 2 can be demonstrated through members gaining more awareness around lifestyle choices and the effects they have on our physical and emotional wellbeing, and through this awareness making informed changes in their lives to improve their health. The benefits from purpose 3 can be demonstrated through the number of members utilising the Shed premises and facilities, such as the gym and workshop and the increased opportunities for social bonding. Use of tools needed for wood work and gardening can cause a risk of injury to those who are using the tools. Risk assessments and safety inductions are completed for this type of work and the benefits far outweigh the potential harm. Men over the age of 18 from the greater Harryville area. Our volunteers can avail of training available which will enable them to organise, plan and deliver programmes within our community. The benefits would be that the volunteers will receive certificates which may help them in their own personal development. This is an incidental benefit.

What your organisation does

Harryville Men’s Shed was established in 2012 and provides a safe space for men to come together, to take part in activities, projects, educational classes, trips away, or to enjoy a cuppa and a chat. We operate 5 days a week from our premises in Harryville and we offer a range of support and signposting services to men in the local area, to assist

with issues around debt, money management, physical and mental health and housing issues. We use our premises to hold awareness sessions around health and wellbeing. Recently we have taken part in a Dementia Awareness and Healthy Eating sessions. We have formed a Walking Group which takes walks in local beauty spots and nature, and we have taken on a Service Level Agreement with MEABC to manage the Harryville Community Garden, which will provide further opportunities for intergenerational projects, plot to plate initiatives and learning new skills through gardening. We work in partnership with other groups in the local area, sharing information and resources to support each other.
