Public benefits
The benefits which come from Ulster Touring Opera’s first purpose are a the cross-border promotion of opera on the island of Ireland, an art form which is often unrepresented at local theatre venues. Ulster Touring Opera will also enable greater access to this art form by presenting opera using immersive technology. Through both cross-border
touring and immersive technology Ulster Touring Opera will enhance the cultural reputation of the province. The benefits of Ulster Touring Opera’s second purpose reflect a commitment to ensuring audiences enjoy the physical and digital content we create, whether they are attending one of our regular cross-border touring productions, or engaging with an augmented reality opera experience using a smartphone. To ensure that this happens, the company are committed to creating work of the highest standard by collaborating with exceptional artists to bring opera to life in truly unique ways. The use of singers and musicians from Ireland also appeals to audiences especially early career local singers who perform in productions as principals or members of the UTO Ensemble. The company’s commitment to making opera more accessible across the north of the island of Ireland and encouraging audiences to attend productions and events is demonstrated by offering affordable ticket prices, performing operas with English translations, establishing a regular cross-border touring network in areas where opera is rarely is ever performed, and engaging with local communities through outreach activities and immersive technology. Ulster Touring Opera's second purpose provides numerous benefits and these are evidenced by feedback from audiences and participants through surveys and interviews. The profile of Ulster Touring Opera has also been raised through the involvement in partnerships with other arts organisations and immersive technology companies in Europe and China. These purposes do not lead to harm. The company’s intended beneficiaries are new and existing audiences engaging with the art form for the first time either at one of our venues or through immersive technology, and the schools and community centres that the company work with. As well as benefiting the general public, Ulster Touring Opera will also benefit singers, musicians and creative artists from the island of Ireland. The next generation of these artists will be inspired by the pioneering cross-border work of Ulster Touring Opera. There is no private benefit flowing from the purposes.

Ulster Touring Opera is a 21st century cross-border company whose aim is to create, present and promote vibrant, innovative and high-quality small and medium-scale opera and immersive technology experiences. Our regular network of touring venues charts a course for bringing the finest artists to local audiences in both Northern Ireland and the
Republic of Ireland. Our immersive technology projects push ourselves, our artists and our partners to envision what opera will look like in an increasingly digital world. All of UTO’s vital work to enrich the lives and education of people across the province of Ulster takes place through our UTO Crescendo projects. With an emphasis on schools, we will leave a lasting legacy both in the pupils who experience UTO’s transformative projects and the teachers we collaborate with.
