Public benefits
The Trustees of Zero Waste North West (ZWNW) believe that our purpose satisfies both elements of the public benefit requirement. The direct benefits which flow from our purpose include: opportunities for people to learn about zero waste approaches to resource management through events and information sharing and also through engaging with others
in creative activities such as the Halloween Parade, the Enough Stuff Festival and the Stendhal Green Team; support for people in making practical changes with initiatives such as the Use Less Shop, Cloth Nappy Library and Bicycle Rescue and Repair; ultimately an improved environment because resources aren’t being wasted. That people recognise these benefits is evidenced by the active membership of ZWNW, the positive feedback from people via local print, radio and social media and the engagement of Derry City and Strabane Council (DCSDC) in working with ZWNW since 2014. Most recently, DCSDC has committed to become a Zero Waste City Region. The beneficiaries of this purpose are at present people living in the Derry City/Strabane District Council area. The purpose does not give rise to any harm. A private benefit from the purpose is that gained by the first ZWNW employee, contracted to set up and manage the Cloth Nappy Library along with the Derry City Centre organisation who are paid rent for hosting the Library. These benefits are both incidental and necessary for the achievement of the charity’s purpose.

ZWNW is a dynamic group of volunteers which formed in 2013 to oppose the building of a waste incinerator. We soon decided that we wanted to put our energy into working ‘for’ new ways of dealing with resources taking the motto ‘it’s not waste until it’s wasted’. We identified the need to research and share information about the possibilities of
transforming the usual models of production and resource use towards systems which value resources and minimise human damage to ourselves and the planet. As concerned citizens, we have grown in confidence, skills and knowledge, working diligently and creatively for eight years. We have developed a three-part model for changing behaviour: education for a new vision; designing infrastructure which enables change; partnership with schools, community groups, businesses and statutory agencies. A measure of our success has been the partnership with Derry City Strabane District Council. In Dec 2017 Council adopted a ZW/CE Strategy, the first Council in NI to do so. In Nov 2020 Council committed to the journey of becoming a ZW City Region, the first Council in these islands to do so. The ZW City process is managed by ZW Europe with ZWNW being the local affiliate. www.zerowastenw.org
