Public benefits

These include: 1. The relief of poverty - we address the consequences of deprivation in such ways as may be thought fit to counter unemployment, low income, lack of education and training, lack of opportunity and social exclusion. 2. the advancement of community development - by promoting social inclusion, encouraging community & voluntary

activity, creating a cohesive community identity, providing a range of community based activities and programmes to promote physical, social and economic improvements in the community. 3. advancement of education - the public benefit involves encouraging and providing opportunities to increase skills and capacity through the provision of training or retraining - particularly among the unemployed. Supporting the physical education of young people with ongoing personal development opportunities and life skills training. Overall, residents who reside in our area of benefit receive many benefits through the work of our Association, in addition to above: - better life opportunities - opportunities to engage in more active lifestyles through the provision of health related activities and programmes leading to improvements in physical and mental health and well-being - opportunities for stronger bonds to develop between people which will reduce social isolation and contribute to a stronger, more cohesive community - opportunities for the community to come together to participate and contribute to a vibrant community life and enhanced community spirit - opportunities to address emerging issues, such as anti-social behaviour or fear of crime - opportunities for children / young people to participate in peer led youth activities and programmes and a wide range of personal development opportunities to develop confidence and self esteem. By removing many of the barriers to participation we are increasing community engagement and participation and encouraging volunteering. These benefits are demonstrated as follows: - At a community level they are documented on social media channels, through feedback to our Committee and volunteers, through an ever increasing demand for our services and activities whereby we could fill every opportunity numerous times over. We pride ourselves on our reputation both locally and across Newry City and have worked in partnership with many other community groups to deliver projects that benefit local residents. - At our Annual General Meeting we present our annual report for the year just passed and this provides a comprehensive record of all that we have delivered for the benefit of the public over the previous year. - As we rely on external grant funding for many of our programmes we have also successfully completed a number of End of Grant reports and evaluations to various funders; these each document how we have benefited the public and ensured value for money in the process. - Through our partnership work - There is no harm arising from any of the purposes. The Charity's immediate beneficiaries are those residents living within our area of benefit. Through our partnership work with other community groups we have been able to extend the reach of our Association to benefit additional residents in neighbouring communities. We are excited to be developing some inter-community activities that will bring further benefit to residents. Pre-Covid, our large community fun days and summer schemes allowed us to include extended family members and friends and we hope to able to resume such events in the not too distant future. There is no private benefit flowing from any of these purposes bar the incidental and necessary fact that Trustees will often get to hear about wider opportunities before general members of the public.

What your organisation does

Ballinacraig Community Association is a grassroots community group, managed and run entirely by local volunteers. We strive to provide a year round programme of activities, events and opportunities to benefit local residents. These include a range of intervention programmes that support overall health and well-being at a local level. Our area of

benefit is quite large and includes a large percentage of NIHE owned houses and social housing, managed by a range of Housing Associations. Many local families are living in poverty and struggling with multiple levels of deprivation. Levels of anti-social behaviour are quite high and political tensions within the community also run high. Ballinacraig Community Association offers many opportunities to local people and strives to provide for all different age groups and build in some opportunities for inter-generational activity. This inter-generational activity forges bonds between generations to break down barriers, reduce fear/fear of crime, reduce social isolation and make new community connections. The list below is intended to give a flavour of how our Association carries out its purpose and is not intended to be exhaustive - note: by securing external funding for our activities we can provide these opportunities as a low cost/no cost local option: - local summer schemes - community fun days - seasonal events and activities (Easter Bunny, Halloween Street Party, Santa Sunday and many more) - Outdoor movie nights for the whole family, - community trips and outings - team building opportunities for children and young people - Dance classes - keep fit - street football - environmental projects - planting and growing/litter picks/encouraging community pride We work in partnership with other statutory, community & voluntary sector partners and have successfully delivered a number of different projects this way
