Public benefits

The direct public benefits which flow from this purpose are; the improved well-being of those living and working in Belfast City Centre achieved through reflection on how the teachings of Christianity are relevant to their lives, the encouragement of good moral choices in order to improve community life, and the training and education of those

volunteering to serve with the Charity. The direct benefits which flow from this purpose are the relief of need through; the provision of compassionate and practical befriending support, advocacy on behalf of those who struggle to represent themselves, signposting those in need to professional help when required, increased public safety brought about by the presence of uniformed City Chaplains on the City’s streets, and the training and education of those volunteering to serve with the Charity. These benefits will be can be demonstrated by; publicly visible uniformed Chaplains proactively engaging with those clearly in need, such as those who are homeless or otherwise in some form distress or those who stop and engage the Chaplains, and the number of volunteers who complete training and are active volunteers. These benefits can be demonstrated by the number of people who have and who are currently being supported by one of the charity’s Chaplains, the number of people signposted to professional help, the visible presence of the Charity’s uniformed Chaplains in the City, and the number of volunteers who complete training and are active volunteers. There is potential for harm in sending volunteers to into a public environment where they will meet those who may behave aggressively toward them due to alcohol or drug consumption, however this is mitigated through having policies in place and providing training to help our volunteers stay safe and is necessary to achieving the purpose. What your organisation does

To advance the Christian religion among people living or working in the Belfast area through providing training and volunteering opportunities for members of Christian churches to evangelise and express their Christian faith through pastoral care. In seeking to achieve this purpose our Chaplains, in the context of pastoral care, invite those they

meet to reflect on how the teachings of Christianity are relevant to their lives and challenges they may be facing. Belfast City Centre Chaplaincy encourages Belfast Churches to engage with and participate in this activity in order to provide pastoral care and promote the Christian faith among the public in Belfast. To relieve the need of people living or working in the Belfast area, who find themselves in need due to workplace stress; conflict with colleagues, friends or family; unemployment; poverty; homelessness, or addiction through the provision of pastoral care, an advocacy service and signposting to professional help.

Charitable purposes

The Object of the Charity is the advancement of the Christian Religion in Belfast and its surrounding areas by: 1. Provision of pastoral support to all who work in the city. 2. Outreach to the people of the city through evangelism, counselling, education and training. 3. Engagement with issues of justice, reconciliation, fairness, equality and dignity as they affect the people of the city. 4. Assisting local churches with their ministry in the city. 5. Nothing in the articles shall authorise an application of the property of the charity for purposes which are not charitable in accordance with S.2 of the Charities Act (Northern Ireland) 2008.
