Public benefits

The direct benefits will be much better school attendance, improved use of information technology and supporting children in disadvantaged areas through crisis and domestic difficulties. Ultimately creating a better school experience and better educational achievement for children many of whom have considerable disadvantages. All of our activities

are geared to improving the Educational achievement of children attending Primary School in Disadvantaged areas of Belfast. We are convinced that better educational achievement will in turn ensure better employment options and in turn a better quality of life. We currently have twenty two Primary Schools working in Partnership with The Goliath Trust. While much of our Education System in Northern Ireland is robust and delivers good results for the majority of our Children, the Education System fails a sizable minority of our children particularly those who live in disadvantages areas. The Goliath Trust’s purpose is to work with all relevant Stakeholders to combat Educational Underachievement in Disadvantaged areas of Belfast. The Trust takes the view that if a child is not provided with a solid educational foundation in Primary School, that child will have difficulty in reaching his or her full potential. Conversely if a child leaves Primary school with a solid educational foundation they have a base from which they can achieve full potential. All our efforts are designed to help School Principals and Teachers provide the best possible Educational Experience for children in disadvantaged areas. The benefits will be demonstrated statistically with an improvement in school attendance in the areas where the programmes are in operation. There has not been any harm identified arising from the purposes. Goliath works at all times to empower School Principals and Teachers to deliver a better experience for children in their care. Children aged between 5-13 years in disadvantaged areas. No private benefit has been identified.

What your organisation does

Since inception, The Goliath Trust has delivered tangible benefits for more than, 6,000 school children. We have invested in excess of £100,000 across a range of worthwhile projects: - School Attendance Scheme - rewarding children who reach/surpass certain attendance levels. Over 2,000 children have benefited with rewards including tickets to the

Lyric Theatre, Grand Opera House and trips to W5 at The Odyssey. - Attendance Awards’ presented to children who attend school every day. With CV-19, this programme has been amended so that children can track their home learning online and are awarded ‘Dinosaur’ stickers for their participation. We hope to recommence it in full when possible. - Digital Learning Hub(DLH) – our DLH holds a monthly meeting to support leading technology teachers in our primary schools. The Hub shows teachers how to get much more from technology with beneficial spin-offs for children. We have held a series of seminars, now moved online due to CV-19. The training helps teachers and classroom assistants to hone IT skills and feedback from participants is universally positive. Teacher quote: “The Goliath charity means we are able to give more to our pupils. There is growing confidence all round. Pupils and teachers alike are benefitting and that can only be good for the future.” We have held online sessions, each attended by 40+ teachers and classrooms assistants and covering skills such as blogging, vlogging, Digital Arts, Film animation and coding. Summer Reading Recovery Project -took part in a pilot summer reading scheme. 150 children participated. They earned rewards for improved reading levels which were monitored and measured by teachers who managed the 9-week scheme. The analysis prepared by the teachers showed impressive appetite for the scheme from the children and earned praise from parents.
