Public benefits

The direct benefits flowing from purpose 1 include: The enhancement of the quality of life of beneficiaries through a bespoke respite experience on Rathlin Island. The beneficiaries will have the opportunity to relax in self-catering accommodation in a safe and supportive environment away from traffic, noise, light pollution and the many other

stresses of their day to day lives. For some beneficiaries ( e.g. those living with autism) the location offers a unique escape from the sensory overloads that they may experience in their day to day lives. The direct benefits from purpose 2 include: The improvement of quality of life through engaging with experiences designed to reduce stress and anxiety. These include bespoke workshops, trips and activities. These activities may provide strategies that the beneficiaries can use at home e.g. a sensory based workshop may offer techniques that help beneficiaries to self-regulate and destress in their daily lives. Beneficiaries will have the opportunity to engage in activities including: - Art painting and printing workshops - Sensory based activities - Interactive Multi sensory activities using iMUSE (see supplementary documents) - Creative writing workshops - Mindfulness and Meditation - Yoga - Trips around the island - Night walks/star gazing - Sound and music activities The direct benefits flowing from purpose 3 include: The improvement of the quality life of beneficiaries through guidance and support focused on the individual needs of the person. This includes bespoke behaviour and communication strategies that can be used to improve the day to day life of the beneficiaries. This support is designed to complement and defer to the professional strategies that may be already in place by a multi-agency team and is based on current good practice guidelines. The benefits from purpose 1,2 and 3 are demonstrated by verbal, non-verbal ( such as PECs/ Makaton) and written feedback from the participants. The value of the DRUIM experience will be measured by responses to ‘before, during and after’ surveys and levels of interest arising which will be reflected in the number of bookings/visits and repeat visits. DRUIM will aim to create repeat visits when possible and progress/ benefit can be measured through ‘ before, during and after’ well being questionaires and satisfaction surveys of services. With permission, the trustees may document the positive benefits of the application of strategies/support using photographic and video evidence. DRUIM will carry out an ongoing process of support and evaluation during/after visits. This will demonstrate the benefit of the services provided. There is no identifiable harm arising from the purposes of the charity. However, when working with children and vulnerable adults there may be some who experience anxiety around being on an island away from their familiar home and routines. This will be carefully managed and supported by the trustees and the parents or carers of the beneficiaries through risk assessment and risk management such as working on a pre visit behaviour management plan designed to de-escalate anxieties. This includes pre visit orientation videos with a virtual tour and/or pre visit day trips. These risk management measures will be agreed with beneficiary, parents/carers and the trustees before the visit and DRUIM will provide reassurance, advice and support throughout their stay. There is a robust safe guarding policy that will be implemented at all times to ensure the risks associated with supporting vulnerable people are reduced. The beneficiaries of the charity are individuals and families who are experiencing stress/social isolation due to living with a disability, long term illness or other social disadvantage who would benefit from respite. This includes persons living with a learning disability; living with autism; living with a physical disability including wheelchair users; persons living with dementia; persons living with PTSD or similar anxiety based conditions; persons living with a loved one in addiction; persons experiencing fatigue or burn out due to caring for a loved one; persons living with displacement due to being a refugee. Beneficiaries also include individuals and families who have been immediately impacted by COVID-19 ( i.e. frontline workers and their families and persons suffering illness or bereavement due to COVID-19.) There is the potential for private benefit for each purpose. Accommodation (Purpose 1) may be rented by the charity from a trustee. Professional services (Purpose 2 and 3) may be provided for workshops/activities delivered to the beneficiaries by some trustees. In all cases the independent trustees will decide if the accommodation or professional service procured is suitable for its charitable purposes and is the most economical and the most appropriate venue/service available on the island for the charity’s purposes. The services will be provided to the charity only when the independent trustees are satisfied that the best option is being selected. These benefits are therefore both necessary and incidental.
