Public benefits
What are the direct benefits flowing from your organisation We have identified 3 specific objectives which will provide the following benefits to the public. Objective 1 – The promotion of education in accordance with Christian principles The beneficial outcomes to beneficiaries who train as Street Pastors will include the learning of new skills
and the development, through education, of approaches necessary to act as Street Pastors. Beneficial outcomes will also be gained by the public through informal education by Street Pastors. Objective 2 – The promotion of health and financial stability The beneficial outcomes to beneficiaries will include improves ‘street safety’, and better prospects for improved health and well-being of people when out and about during evenings in Antrim and Newtownabbey. These health benefits will be gained by the public through Street Pastors providing advice and assistance on the streets. Referral to other appropriate agencies can be made if required. Objective 3 – The advancement of the Christian Faith The beneficial outcomes to our volunteers will include the strengthening of faith and fellowship with other people through worship, prayer and bible study. We believe that the general public as a whole benefit from this purpose by seeing us caring, listening and helping anyone from any background in any way we can. The General Public benefit from our existence as they are reassured by our presence and are aware of our ethos and purpose. We receive many messages of thanks either in person on the streets, or via social media and email. PSNI know that we can handle certain situations without their intervention which allows them to better allocate their resources which helps the public purse. Our volunteers benefit from the training and are confident in their ability to deal with any situation that presents itself. This is shown in their confidence in dealing with the wide and varied situations that we come across. There is no harm flowing from any of these purposes. Anyone can be described as a benefiting from our organisation. We help anyone who finds themselves in a situation that they feel they need assistance with. This could be as simple as facilitating a call home, or for a taxi, right through to supporting more complex needs and potentially referring on to further organisations who specialise in these areas. Our Volunteers benefit from the training and the fellowship of coming together as a team to encourage each other. PSNI, PCSP and other agencies benefit from us as we help to assist in their work which allows us all to cover a wider area and assist more people. Our volunteers do not benefit financially in any way.

We promote ourselves as the Church in Action on the Streets to Care, Listen and Help. As a Christian organisation, our volunteers come from many of the churches in the area and serve their community. We patrol various towns within the Council Area mostly between 7.30pm and 12.00 midnight on Fridays and Saturdays but will facilitate other times as
required. Our main contact would be with youths but we also operate in the night time economy. Our reason for being there is to help people as we find them. They may be in distress, injured, disoriented or behaving anti-socially because of alcohol or drugs. We operate on a cross community basis serving all sections of the community and in this we demonstrate the intrinsic Christian value of loving our neighbour without prejudice. We help vulnerable people get home safely; we provide water, flip-flops & foil blankets as needed. We pick up broken glass which may become weapons in the heat of the moment and we calm anti-social behaviour with our presence and by giving out sweets and providing a listening ear. We work with the District Policing team, local council and PCSP to establish current hotspots and issues to find areas where we can be of most benefit to people who would need us most. Street Pastors wear uniform which is distinguished by the Street Pastor logo. This often encourages questions from people who ask about our Christian beliefs. When asked, we share our belief in Jesus Christ and His love for all mankind and pray with individuals as requested. This advances the Christian faith for the benefit of the public. We try to uphold best practice in all our services for public benefit. We show the relevance of church and faith, to life and society by building the capacity and skills of our Street Pastors as non-judgmental and non-discriminatory agents of peace, reconciliation and safety in our community. This is a positive influence upon public morality and civic cohesion.
