Public benefits
The direct benefits flowing from Sperrin U3A’s purposes of i. the advancement of education and ii. the provision of facilities for leisure time and recreational activities include the enhancement of the lives of Sperrin U3A’s retired and semi retired members through shared learning opportunities and activities, the reduction of social isolation
through the widening of social contacts and an overall improvement in members’ physical and mental health. Other benefits are evidenced through the shared learning opportunities members participate in, keeping minds active and acquiring new knowledge and skills. Further benefits are demonstrated by the increase in the number of social outlets members engage with, the number of new friendships they form and the wider engagement they have with local and regional community and U3A networks. Members who experience social isolation and loneliness due to caring responsibilities, illness or bereavement report improvements in their health and well being and no longer feel as socially isolated and lonely on becoming members of Sperrin U3A. There is no perceived harm arising from the purposes of Sperrin U3A. The beneficiaries are older adults who are no longer in full time employment.
