Public benefits

The direct benefit which flows from our purpose is that our varied and comprehensive programme for girls and young women increases their confidence, skills and knowledge so that they become active, responsible citizens through active learning, support and encouragement. Our members are empowered to make a positive contribution to society

through building friendships, team work and taking on responsible leadership roles. The guiding programme is delivered in such a way that it encourages each member to do her best and to aspire to be the best she can be. Our programmes and delivery methods are reviewed on a regular basis and are supported, recognised and monitored at local, regional, national and international levels within the guiding community and also, from time to time by independent evaluations of our activities, statutory youth services and government departments. In providing these services there is no known harm flowing from the purpose of Catholic Guides of Ireland. The benefits of this purpose are provided to children, young people and volunteers without distinction of origin, race, creed, gender, sexual orientation or ability in Northern Ireland There is no private benefit flowing from this purpose.

What your organisation does

To achieve this Catholic Guides of Ireland supports an extensive variety of services to its members. It supports the delivery of a wide range of programme opportunities that help the development of individual potential, encouraging community involvement and providing opportunities for young people to be listened to and have their say. Catholic

Guides of Ireland achieves its aim through a system of progressive self-education, known as the Choices Programme, the principal elements of which are: a. Voluntary membership of a group which, guided by adults, is increasingly self- governing in its successive age groups. b. Commitment to a code of living as expressed in the Promise and Laws, the meaning of which is expanded as the member grows towards maturity. c. The provision of a wide range of attractive, constructive and challenging activities, including opportunities for adventure and exploration both indoors and outdoors. d. The provision of opportunities for leadership and responsibility. e. earning by doing. f. Encouragement of activity in small groups. g. An award scheme, which encourages participation in its full range of activities and provides recognition of individual and group achievements such as the Chief Commissioner’s Award and Oisin Award.

The purpose of the Unit is to provide the Guiding Programme of the Catholic Guides of Ireland, which promotes and fosters the spiritual, moral, cultural, intellectual, social and physical development of its members, to girls and young women at a local level.
