Public benefits

The direct benefits which flow from the purpose of Lislea Men's Shed include reduction of social isolation and enhanced wellbeing of the membership. The charity operates within a deprived area and many of the members are elderly, retired or suffering from disability. The Shed provides a focus for social engagement, promotes healthy exercise

(walking, gardening, craft activities etc) and encourages lifelong learning in a relaxed atmosphere. The Shed contributes to community development and solidarity. These benefits will be demonstrated primarily through regular discussion with, and feedback from, the membership. The Shed retains ongoing contacts with local community organisations and individuals - who also provide feedback and suggestions for possible improvement or future projects. A degree of external oversight is provided through our membership of national organisations and through liaison - already established - with statutory agencies (Newry Mourne & Down District Council, Southern Health & Social Care Trust etc). No harm has been identified arising from the purpose of the charity. The charity's main beneficiaries are the members of Lislea Men's Shed. These are men resident in Lislea and surrounding districts. The area is largely rural and underdeveloped. Many members are elderly, retired or suffering from disability. The wider Lislea community benefits from the improvement and maintenance of local amenities undertaken by the members, and from the provision of a number of social and educational events throughout the year organised by the charity. A private benefit flowing from this purpose may accrue to local businesses who provide modest sponsorship to the charity. This might include, for example, donations of raffle prizes or of personal protective equipment for the use of the members. The businesses gain a private benefit from the publicity involved, but this is incidental and necessary to the fulfilment of the purpose of the charity.
