Public benefits

The direct benefit flowing from the advancement of community development is the provision of a Community Hub and Shared Space in the town of Maghera which will act as a focal point, providing opportunities for increased social interaction and community-led projects. The ultimate benefit is to increase and strengthen community activity in the area.

The private benefit of payment of a salary to a venue manager, is incidental. The purpose is beneficial and causes no harm. The direct benefit flowing from the advancement of the health and well-being, is an increase in health and quality of life for the people of the area who are involved in the programme, by the provision of a space for social interaction and the organisation of talks and workshops on mental and physical well-being. There is no harm flowing from this purpose. The private benefit of increased health and well-being to members of the charity by partaking in the activities, is incidental. The direct benefit that flows from the advancement of education, is the opportunity to increase the level of education in the area by the development of new skills in the fields of practical trades, traditional practices, arts and crafts and IT. The possibility of harm, for example by accidents involving machinery in the workshops, is outweighed by the benefit and has been addressed by the provision of training, and the preparation of policies and procedures identifying and managing risks. The private benefits of an increased chance of gaining employment due to acquiring new skills, and the payment of fees to individuals for organising workshops are incidental. The direct benefits flowing from the advancement of the culture and heritage of the area is that the local community can better understand and enjoy their local traditions and heritage and that the heritage is preserved and documented for future generations to experience. There is no harm anticipated from this purpose and the private benefit to individuals learning about the history of the area is incidental. The direct benefits flowing from the advancement of good community relations is an increase in tolerance and understanding between people of differing backgrounds in the town and surrounding area. MHS Heritage & Culture will promote better community relations using local history, heritage and cultural events to emphasise shared values and to encourage appreciation and respect for the traditions of different groups. No harm flows from this purpose and there is no private benefit to individuals. The benefits flowing from each of the purposes will be demonstrated by: a) monitoring the number of people who visit the Community Hub and take part in programmes and events b) feedback from those using our services throughout the year gathered through surveys and public meetings. c) working with Community Evaluation NI to develop monitoring and evaluation models which suit our different programmes. The beneficiaries of the charity are the members of the general public living in Maghera and the surrounding area, particularly the elderly and volunteers.

What your organisation does

Our vision is to create an open, welcoming and neighbourly space in the centre of Maghera where everybody is invited to drop in and socialise in a relaxed environment. We are working towards establishing a Community Hub and Shared Space, which will be used by the entire community and particularly by the older inhabitants. Currently there is no

cross-community facility in the town where people can meet and socialise with no cost involved. We plan to include a Men’s Shed and Women’s Craft room in the Hub where people can practise their skills and pass them on to others through workshops and practical demonstrations. We will also be running computer classes for those unfamiliar with IT. The Hub will address social isolation in the area by running activities and health workshops so improving the health and well-being of the community. We run events and activities which relate to the heritage and culture of the area, particularly in relation to music and poetry, keeping local customs alive. We collect and document local history and run projects and programmes which promote understanding and respect for the different traditions in the town.
