Public benefits
Whilst a public benefit statement has been provided the Commission has relied on other evidence to satisfy itself that the public benefit requirement has been met. Benefits are: That parents or care givers are able to trial cloth nappies and/or slings for free or a nominal cost, trying different styles, brands types and establish what works best
for them. They can potentially save money by avoiding purchasing single use nappies. To develop the new skill of using a sling safely with a child. Education on the impact of single use nappies and wipes vs reusable. Appropriate use of slings improves breastfeeding rates, improved outcomes for premature babies with skin to skin contact including reduced mortality rates, improved temperature regulation, attachment with mental health benefits lasting into adulthood for the child, improved motor skills, benefits to infants with hip dysplasia, reduced incidence of positional plagiocephaly. For the parent or caregiver, sling use can result in improved mental health, aid bonding and can reduce back pain in comparison to carrying in arms. Cloth nappy use can reduce allergies caused by single use nappies. Promotion of sustainable waste management through the reduction of disposable nappies going to landfill, the public receive help to choose nappies that will suit them reducing the need to buy nappies that may not work for them. Clients reduce their disposable nappy use during the course of the hire period. The proper use of waste water system to deal with the human waste created by the baby. Clients converting to cloth reduces the amount of disposable wipes entering the waste water system. The support provided to new families adjusting to parenthood by providing a social gathering in which they can chat to other like-minded parents. The public also benefit from our two social media groups, which provide specific support and allows families who have met at a meet to connect online to continue to build on friendships initiated at a sling or nappy meet. In fact these groups are exactly how the three trustees got to know each other well between seeing each other infrequently at meets. The evidence is demonstrated 1. through the number of hires and the number of people who attend meets for advice as well as numbers converted to use of cloth nappies. 2. parents’ new or improved ability to use the learned techniques to safely carry their baby and people’s improved knowledge on environmental impact of their parenting choices. 3. Also the benefits of slings have been noted in many studies. References for some studies and a brief explanation of these benefits can be found here http://www.babywearing.co.uk/babywearing-articles/ 4. by the reduced need to purchase single use nappies/wipes by those who hire cloth nappy trial kits. 5. by the number of lengthy discussions and the atmosphere of friendship within the social media groups. We often find that small groups of friends meet up socially between meets and particularly for slings they can enjoy family outings together that may not have been possible without slings. The is no harm resulting from our purposes. Parents and carers of young children and older children and adults with urinary or faecal incontinence. There is a private benefit for the baby wearing consultants who we commission to conduct private babywearing consultations and run workshops. The sling library receives the equivalent to the hire fees for each client for those events and the remainder is paid to the consultant for their time and expertise. This is incidental and is necessary for private consultations and workshops which require a higher level of qualification. Another private benefit to trustees and volunteers is the social aspect of making friends at meets and through online interaction. There is an indirect benefit to councils of the nappy hires of not having to pay as much for landfill waste.
... [more] [less]What your organisation does
We run monthly meetings that are free to attend, at a meeting a parent or carer can learn about how to use cloth nappies and can hire a nappy kit and /or they can watch or participate in demonstrations of carriers and slings and get help to use a carriers safely. If they choose to do so they can hire a carrier for a fee so they don't buy one
without trying it to know if it suits their needs. We also attend some baby fairs and work alongside some councils to deliver nappy schemes. We have a number of volunteers spread out over Northern Ireland for members of the public that wouldn't be able to travel to a meet to collect a nappy kit. We also offer private consultations and workshops for clients to benefit from more specific requirements

Charitable purposes
The Charity’s objects (“Objects”) are to: (a) Advance the health of babies and the wellbeing of parents or carers; (b) Relieve parents or carers experiencing financial hardship; and (c) Advance environmental protection By operating a cloth nappy library service in Northern Ireland (the “area of benefit”) that will provide education, information and guidance on the use of reusable nappies, loan or hire trial cloth nappy kits and provide opportunities for parents or carers of babies to meet to find mutual support, exchange views and share common concerns. Reusable cloth nappies are a chemical free and less costly option than that of purchasing non-reusable nappies and their use will enhance the protection of the environment by reducing landfill waste.
