The purpose of the Northern Ireland Amenity Council is to help people make a positive contribution to the environment in which they live or work. Direct Benefits The direct benefits flowing from this purpose are: • Bringing communities together to enhance social interaction and cooperation • Improves the built environment so

enhances the appearance of Towns, Villages, Housing Areas, School, Healthcare facilities, making them better places to live or work • Enhancing the community awareness of the environment in which they live and work and hence promoting a sense of pride within the community • Promoting physical and activity within the community to improve their environment How can the benefits be demonstrated The benefits have been demonstrated by: • We have received feedback from participants that the Northern Ireland Amenity Council has enhanced the place that they live or work • Entries for the various categories have increased significantly over the last number of years to around 500 per year • The Northern Ireland Amenity Council is supported by 10 local councils within Northern Ireland, The Northern Ireland Housing Executive, George Best Belfast City Airport (Commercial Sponsor) • The Best Kept Awards are now in their 62nd year and are recognised throughout the province as a leading environmental awareness activity Is there any harm We do not believe that any harm arises from our purpose. Who are the beneficiaries The following are beneficiaries: • Schools: all pupils, teachers and parents • Healthcare Facilities: all staff, service users, residents and visitors • Housing Areas: all housing residents and community groups • Cities Towns & Villages, all residents of participating entries, community groups, visitors, and tourists Private Benefit There is no ‘private benefit’ however a wider economic benefit to Northern Ireland’s economy is through attracting tourists to towns and villages that are extremely attractive, well-maintained and nicely presented, however this benefit is incidental as it is a direct effect of having an improvement in the town or village.

What your organisation does

The organisation's role is to administer the various 'Best Kept' competitions and schemes in Northern Ireland in relation to Cities, Towns, Villages, Housing Areas, Healthcare Facilities and Schools in Northern Ireland or any part thereof and to adjudicate or provide for the adjudication of any such competitions and to promote and sponsor same and

make available such prizes, trophies or other awards to successful entrants.
