Public benefits
Our purpose is to encourage the study and cross-community appreciation of local history, folklore, archaeology and antiquities through a varied programme of monthly talks on topics of historical/cultural interest, the publication of our journal and information on our website for the benefit of Society members, visitors and the people of the
Coleraine and Causeway coast area. The Society also encourages interest in the historical built environment to highlight the importance of preserving such sites both for the present and future generations. The identified benefits can be shown by 1. the Society membership which annually achieves upwards of 100 local and 40 overseas, associate members, 2. the monthly talks which attract 50 - 75 members and other interested parties, 3. the journal, "Bann Disc", which includes articles by members and non-members, with a print run of 500 copies annually, is available to society members and the general public at a sustainable cost. An archive of 24 editions, the first 20 of which have been indexed by subject/author, are an invaluable source of research information on the heritage of the Causeway Coast area, 4. our open website which is maintained and updated regularly for the benefit of visitors locally and abroad. It also provides a means of purchasing our publications on-line. 5. Regular annual outings, for Society members and friends, to locations, including buildings of historical interest, to fulfil our aim of encouraging interest in and preservation of the historical built environment. There is no harm arising from our Society's purposes. The charity's beneficiaries are the society's members, visitors and the general public residing in the Causeway Coast and Glens council area together with all others who have an interest in our local history. A private benefit accrues to the venue used for monthly meetings and the hotel/restaurant used for the Society's combined Annual General Meeting and dinner. This also applies to the coach company and any restaurants used for the annual outings and the printing firm engaged to produce all our printed material. In all cases the benefit is Incidental.
... [more] [less]What your organisation does
The Historical Society holds monthly meetings from September to May (excl. December) which mainly involve presentations, either from members or guest speakers, on topics of local historical or cultural interest. In June each year an outing is arranged to visit locations, including buildings of historical interest within the local borough and
beyond, assisted by expert guides. Annually, the Society, through an editorial subcommittee, produces a journal, "Bann Disc" (now in it's 24th edition) comprising articles, by members and non-members, covering all aspects of the history, culture and folklore of our borough council area. Besides availability to local and overseas associate members, the journal is supplied to district libraries and can be purchased by the general public through local commercial outlets. The Society acts as a focal point for enquiries relating to the local heritage and historical scene.
