Public benefits
The North Down and Ards Downs syndrome is set up for the benefit of its members and their families. Our focus includes the nurturing and development of social skills, friendships with peers, and increased confidence for people with Down's Syndrome. The aim of this is that our children and young adults feel less isolated and can provide the
maximum contribution to society. We also set out to promote a greater understanding of what Down’s Syndrome is, how people with Down’s Syndrome can be supported to achieve their potential and how they can be accepted into and contribute to everyday society. We strive to create of a network of people with experience of bringing up children with Down’s Syndrome who can share advice with parents of younger children and babies with Down’s Syndrome. The aim of this is to reduce isolation and the fear of the unknown and empower families to make better choices for their child. This network also serves to allow members to share knowledge about events, clubs and societies within the area so that others can try these out. This promotes social inclusion, the development of friendships and support networks and the development of various skills such as social, motor skills, and life skills. The success of our intentions is evidenced through monitoring the development of our members. Evidence of this includes improvements in social interaction with peers, and the general public, educational successes and employment successes. We also evidence success through monitoring how our members feel they are accepted into society. The efficacy of the group is also evidenced through our growing membership, especially those with very young children and babies and through seeing friendships develop between the children and their parents. The events that we hold improve communication, gross and fine motor skills in infants and children and social skills and confidence in the older children. The purpose of the charity does not lead to any harm and there is no private financial benefit. The beneficiaries of the charity are primarily people with Down's Syndrome along with their families, friends, carers and the general public as a whole. We strive to support our members to develop as individuals, promoting greater social inclusion and acceptance whilst promoting the inclusion of people with Downs syndrome in mainstream society. In this way we hope to benefit society as a whole. Our specific support for parents and carers of children with Down’s Syndrome can span the whole of the child’s development and include matters such as feeding, health, toileting and education. The beneficiaries of the charity are primarily the members with Downs syndrome and their families and caregivers.
... [more] [less]What your organisation does
We provide a space for parents of children with Down's Syndrome to meet other families in the local area. This sharing of experiences and information about living with Down's syndrome may combat fears and anxieties and provide emotional and practical support. We have a range of regular activities to assist with developing our children and young
adults social skills and confidence. Families meet on a regular basis for support purposes and regular social events are arranged at key times throughout the year.
