Public benefits
The direct benefits which flow from purpose 1 include the provision of opportunities for the local community to volunteer through the Friends of the Abbey (FoA) and environmental projects. This purpose benefits the whole community of Greyabbey and district including local traders. FoA encourages visitors to the Abbey and by extension the village
of Greyabbey, increasing visitor spend in local businesses. Environmental projects have enhanced the appearance of Greyabbey making the village more attractive to local people and future investors in the area. The direct benefits flowing from purpose 2 include the range of community events and activities offered free of charge to local residents creating community cohesion and helping to reduce rural social isolation. The benefits which flow from P1 are demonstrated, in that we have 17 volunteers through the FOA and environmental projects which provides them with skills and new experiences making them more employable. This volunteer effort also encourages visitors to the Abbey and by extension the village, eg in 2018 we had 7000 visitors to the abbey, increasing visitor spend in local businesses. In addition through environmental projects we have enhanced the appearance of Greyabbey, making the village more attractive to local people and new businesses coming into the area and employing local people. One new business has set up in the past year. The benefits which flows from P2 are demonstrated through the wide range of FREE family friendly Cross Community activities at Christmas, Easter and during the summer. Through this work we know community spirit has increased and there is greater social interaction and less anti-social behaviour. There is no harm arising from either Purpose 1 or Purpose 2. Our beneficiaries are people living in Greyabbey and District, local traders and other community groups in Greyabbey and the Ards Peninsula. Other beneficiaries are visitors to Greyabbey. A benefit to Trustees may arise from undertaking and participating in organisation of events, activities and training as they may gain skills and experiences which are transferable to other settings. These benefits are incidental and necessary to ensure the benefit is provided to our beneficiaries.
... [more] [less]What your organisation does
Our group meets monthly and organises community events, clean ups, environmental projects and supports and organises volunteers in the running the Friends of the Abbey project opening this facility to visitors and local people in the area on a regular basis all maintained by volunteer effort. We also engage with Central and Local Government
Departments for provision of services and facilities to Greyabbey and District. As part of programme of events we run activities at Christmas, Easter and during Summer Months to bring together the community and create community cohesion. These activities are very well attended and on occasion we run them in partnership with other local groups building relationships at a local level.
