Public benefits
The community benefit and are enriched by the open and free access to contemporary art which is provided by the Engine Room Gallery's programme of exhibitions which are open to the public five days a week throughout the year The East Belfast Art Collective has for twenty-one years run the Engine Room Gallery which has organised and hosted at least
twelve contemporary art exhibitions each year. We build gallery, exhibition and workshop spaces in the premises we use. At times we have had more than one gallery in the city and our current premises has three large gallery spaces, workshop space and storage areas. In the current premises there is a programme of twenty-four exhibitions in the year with space for more shows at short notice. We also have a long window space in North Street which allows continual public viewing. We would organise exhibitions in other spaces throughout the country in schools, council spaces such as City Hall, banks and community spaces periodically as the need arises There has been no harm identified arising from the company purposes While the general public are the beneficiaries of what we do, because of the scale of our programmes hundreds of visual artists over the years have received benefit from what we do as we would exhibit at least one hundred artists each year on our programme. Also because we are pro-active in involving schools, colleges and universities in our programmes we would identify young people as receiving benefit from what we do Any private benefit which arises from the exhibition and sale of contemporary art is incidental and necessary to the functioning of the gallery. For the last five years the gallery has functioned independantly without funding from the Arts Council or from Belfast City Council and we have relied on building developers to provide premises. Since leaving our funded premises in East Belfast and moving to a building provided by a developer the gallery has had two further major moves within Belfast city centre, from Clarence Street to 5 Donegall Square South and then to 59 North Street. Although each move involved a lot of work the programme of exhibitions continued and we are very grateful to the development companies for supporting the viewing of comtemporary art for the benefit of the public in the city

The East Belfast Arts Collective is a group of visual artists whose purpose is to promote and teach contemporary art to the general public, to encourage and work with young people who have an interest in art through programmes which involve schools, colleges and universities in exhibitions, artist talks, teaching the presentation of work for
exhibiting which includes framing, installation and curating. We have worked for 21 years with individual artists, studio groups, print workshops, schools, colleges, university and community groups presenting a wide range of contemporary art for both the local public and visitors to the city. All the work and programmes of exhibition are carried out by a team of volunteers and are free to all the artists and groups involved and are free to the general public.
