Public benefits
What are the direct benefits flowing from the organisation’s purposes? The Prison Service Trust meets the Public Benefit Requirement by the relief of poverty through the provision of donations, bursaries and grants as well as respite services, counseling and other forms of advice and support. The provision of this assistance has enabled the Trust
to relieve the poverty of its Beneficiaries (whether financial or otherwise) and also to alleviate the difficulties they face as a result of their poverty, improving their welfare, encouraging their physical and emotional well-being and thus helping them to cope better with the challenges of life. The 'poverty exception' applies in this case; the Trust seeks to relieve the poverty of its Beneficiaries and this is regarded as being for the public benefit even where there is a restricted or smaller potential group of beneficiaries. How can the benefits be demonstrated? These benefits are demonstrated through feedback from Beneficiaries and from regular evaluation of the services provided to Beneficiaries. Is there any harm arising from any of the purposes? There is no harm arising from any of the purposes. Who are the charity’s beneficiaries? The charity’s Beneficiaries are serving members of the Northern Ireland Prison Service and their dependents, former members of the Northern Ireland Prison Service who are medically retired and their dependents, and the widows, widowers, family members and dependents of those members of the Northern Ireland Prison Service who died in service. Is there any private benefit from any of the purposes? Is it incidental and necessary? There is no private benefit flowing from any of the purposes.
