Public benefits

Purpose (1) The promotion of community participation in healthy recreation in Belfast (the “area of benefit”) insofar as exclusively charitable, in particular by the provision of facilities for, and coaching, training and mentoring in, the playing of sports and other recreational activities. The direct benefits that flow from purpose 1 include

increased participation in activities leading to improvements in mental and physical health and increased self-esteem. Purpose (2) The relief of those in need by reason of youth insofar as is exclusively charitable by organising programmes of physical, educational and other activities as a means of advancing in life and helping young people by developing their skills and capacities and their mental, physical and moral capabilities through leisure time activities. The direct benefits that flow from purpose 2 include greater physical and mental resilience, improved employ-ability skills and ensuring young people engage with health and well-being at a key stage and remain in sustainable activity pathway. The benefits can be demonstrated by records of participation and the numbers participating in our programmes including an ongoing Summer Programme which we run. Feedback from our post programme surveys which specifically ask about benefits. Continual referrals to our facility also demonstrates the benefits. The large numbers of individuals who return to become volunteers to our service demonstrates the benefits. The abundance of research that links the specific health benefits to an active lifestyle. There is a minor risk of injury through participation so we have experienced Physical Trainers give injury prevention and gym safety advice and risk assessments are conducted. Any potential risk and harm is offset by the terms of engagement within the Gym operating within the guidelines and operating procedures set out by C.H.I.L.D. The beneficiaries are the young people of Belfast and their families, peers and potentially their local communities. The Trustees and Volunteers and other professional team leaders who use our facilities gain a private incidental benefit through our ongoing training in good governance, ongoing on the job training and familiarisation. Through this training these individuals gain skills & experience which can be transferable to other settings. However, Families and peers of the young people as well as potentially their communities will gain secondary benefit through the young people bringing new skills to their peers and local communities and families will see greater well-being and stability with their young people. These benefits are all incidental and necessary to ensure the benefit is provided to our beneficiaries.

What your organisation does

Over the last year we have already set up, by way of financial support from Belfast Child CIC, a fully functional gym and training academy in Belfast City Centre. This key location has already become a centrally shared hub by many groups and organisations across Belfast. At our College Street facility we run daily health and well-being classes,

confidence and esteem building classes, provide valuable work experience for unemployed young people and accredited courses to help on the road to employment. We currently run classes and provide work experience for young people from Youth Action, The Now Group, Belfast Metropolitan College, Start 360, and The Simon Community, which sees an average of 150 young people through our doors each week. All our volunteer coaches are fully qualified, fully insured, trained in Keeping Children Safe, Access NI checked, First Aiders, trained in the use of a Defibrillator, Fire Warden Training And Health & Safety At Work. During the summer of 2017 we also ran a life savers programme to enable young people involved in the programme to gain similar qualifications with additional training in Food Hygiene, Money Management, Goal Setting And Life Maps. This is one of our programmes which we are looking to grow in 2018. All of our gym equipment is being provided and funded by Belfast Child CIC whose sole purpose was to set up such a facility for young people.
