The overall Aim of the Bright Umbrella Drama Co. (BUDCo) is the advancement of the arts in Northern Ireland and further afield. The specific Purposes, as laid out in our constitution, are as follows. BUDCo Purpose 1: The performance of plays and other dramatic works including improvised works, poetry and prose readings Benefit Element Benefit
flowing from this purpose: The direct benefits flowing from this purpose include: opportunities for members of the public to perform in plays and other drama works and to gain enjoyment and educational benefits from this; opportunities for audiences, drawn from the wider public, to enjoy performances and theatrical works; promotion of social inclusion and the combatting of social exclusion through people being involved as part of a group, making friends and improving their communication skills; opportunities for people to write and perform their own plays and other public drama works How we can demonstrate this: Through a good uptake of acting opportunities by members of the public; through measuring and recording audience attendance numbers; group discussions, questionnaires and informal observance of the impact of activities on social inclusion; people writing and submitting their own works and having these performed by BUDCo casts Possibility of harm: There are no possibilities of harm arising from this purpose Public Element Who the benefit is for: Members of the general public who wish to be actors & performers, writers and audience members Private benefit: No private benefit arises from this purpose BUDCo Purpose 2: Educational activities in respect of drama and the theatre such as theatrical performances, classes, talks and workshops in schools, colleges and other settings Benefit Element Benefit flowing from this purpose: The direct benefits flowing from this purpose include: pupils, students and teachers having the opportunity to see works in performance that they may be studying academically; pupils and students gaining greater knowledge and insight into the meanings, themes and dramatic methods involved in particular theatrical works (e.g. Shakespeare and other classical theatre works); students and pupils having the opportunity to further their education through engaging with BUDCo actors for example through performing scenes with them or ‘hot seating’ drama characters (e.g. questioning ‘Macbeth’ or ‘Othello’) in order to gain a greater insight into works of drama and the motivations of literary characters; members of the public gaining a greater knowledge of and enjoyment of dramatic works through attending talks and lectures How we can demonstrate this: Through questionnaires completed by teachers, pupils, students and the general public after each event of programme. Through discussion and informal feedback following events. Through educationalists reporting satisfaction with event content Possibility of harm: There are no possibilities of harm arising from this purpose Public Element Who the benefit is for: The general public, teachers and educationalists, pupils and students. Private benefit: No private benefit arises from this purpose BUDCo Purpose 3: The involvement of the public in drama and theatrical works through enrolling them as actors, technicians and backstage crew Benefit Element Benefit flowing from this purpose: The direct benefits flowing from this purpose include: opportunities for members of the public to enjoy acting and directing; learning new skills such as set building, stage sound and lighting, stage management and ‘front of house’ activities (taking tickets, acting as ushers, selling programmes, etc) social inclusion and an opportunity to make friends. How we can demonstrate this: Through a good uptake of various opportunities available; through people being assisted to gain informal and formal qualifications in respect of theatre skills (e.g. attendance at short courses, OCN certificates, diplomas, degrees, etc); through questionnaires regarding the quality of people’s experiences; through discussion and informal feedback Possibility of harm: There are no possibilities of harm arising from this purpose Public Element Who the benefit is for: Members of the public, actors, trainee technicians (amateur and professional) Private benefit: No private benefit arises from this purpose
