Public benefits
The direct benefits flowing from the educational purpose (#1) include greater local awareness of the significance of the Derry Walls and a greater sense of shared public ownership of the monument. The direct benefits flowing from the preservation, conservation and improvement purpose (#2) include an increased body of knowledge and expertise about
the Derry Walls and their conservation and management requirements, shared between public agencies, volunteers and community organisations. The direct benefits flowing from the educational purpose (#1) are demonstrated through numbers of the general public participating in events; the number of schools/college involved in projects; the number of interns and volunteers supported. The direct benefits flowing from the preservation, conservation and improvement purpose (#2) are demonstrated through the number of archaeological, historical and design studies initiated; the number of capital investments initiated; and the number of regional, national and international exchanges of best practice undertaken. The is no harm arising from the purposes. These activities will benefit the general public locally and internationally, in particular visitors, local residents of who live within or nearby the Derry Walls, individuals and voluntary groups with an interest in the heritage of the Derry Walls. The improvement of the presentation of the Walled City and the Derry Walls will benefit businesses operating in the locality but this is an incidental benefit and not essential for the achievement of the delivery of the purposes for the benefit to the public.
