Public benefits

The direct benefits flowing from purpose 1, the advancement of education, is enhanced understanding and awareness of the Irish language and its heritage, access to Irish language classes for beginners, improvers and advanced learners, and opportunities to participate in workshops and training courses within their local community. The direct

benefits flowing from purpose 2, the advancement of citizenship or community development, is a greater sense of citizenship through participation in community activity, inclusion in social events bringing the community together, support for local families and young people through the provision of Irish language youth work. The direct benefits flowing from purpose 3, the advancement of the arts, culture, heritage or science, is greater participation in and appreciation of Irish language arts, culture, heritage and participation in science activities, increased opportunities to take part in traditional arts, culture and heritage events and engagement with Irish language and a variety of Irish cultural artforms. The benefits from purpose 1 are demonstrated through the number of attendees at classes, workshops and training courses and through the results and qualifications gained by participants. The benefits from purpose 2 are demonstrated through the quantity and quality of Irish language and Irish cultural events and activities and the number of attendees at social events and community engagement events. The benefits will also be demonstrated by the number of families choosing to raise their family through the medium of Irish and the number of families participating in activities. The benefits from purpose 3 are demonstrated by the number of additional events promoting the arts and culture and by hosting Irish language artists and English language artists whose focus is on Irish arts and heritage. The benefit will also be demonstrated by the number of events to promote local heritage and customs, as well as the number of attendees. There is no harm from our purposes. The beneficiaries of our purposes are the Irish speaking community in Armagh and those learning the language, students attending Irish medium schools and their families, those interested in Irish language, culture and heritage and the wider general public in Armagh city and the surrounding district. Private benefit: Aonach Mhacha hopes to appoint a member of staff to oversee the programme of activities and manage a new cultural centre. This private benefit is necessary to ensure the optimum benefit to the general public. A new cultural hub may lead to regeneration of the surrounding area, which may benefit business owners in the vicinity. Artists and teachers who perform at events may privately benefit. This is necessary so that the general public can access the benefits.

Charitable purposes

The Charity’s objects (“Objects”) are specifically restricted to the following:- The advancement of education, the promotion of traditional arts, heritage and Irish culture among Irish speaking people and the general public in Armagh and its environs (the “area of benefit”) and the promotion of community development and in particular to: (a) develop an awareness of and encourage appreciation of Irish culture through the promotion of the Irish language, music, drama, poetry, literature visual arts, sport and history; (b) raise awareness, educate and encourage participation in the study and celebration of local heritage, oral history, customs and pastimes of Armagh and the surrounding areas; (c) encourage participation in traditional arts and Irish cultural activities through the provision of workshops, classes, entertainment and other participatory activities; (d) provide facilities and support to traditional arts, cultural and community groups and organisations; (e) promote training and employment opportunities, particularly in the arts and in Irish cultural organisations; (f) maintain and manage a cultural centre for activities promoted by the Charity in furtherance of its Objects.
