Public benefits

The Direct Benefits flowing from the purposes of Junior Belfast Giants Ice Hockey Club are: A) - Provision of facilities, qualified coaching and kit and equipment to get started and continue playing, team travel (players can see hockey from other club/culture perspectives) and ability to play in adulthood (recreational level) or as stepping stone

into professional leagues and to produce improvements in physical, mental & emotional wellbeing, healthy eating and nutritional guidance via off ice training. B)- Development of well-rounded individuals by encouraging sportsmanship, trust and ethical play/behaviour. Hockey is character-building as players learn value of teamworking, respecting others, co-operation, good self-esteem and managing stress and emotion and constructive feedback. C) - JBG can offer quality coaching and plan for the future by developing volunteers and older youth D) - Including & integrating diverse range of players based upon differing ages, gender, abilities, ethnicity, culture and nationality - breaks down barriers and preconceived stereotypes By diverse range of membership, steady increase in participants, success of club and individuals, continuous improvements in player physical and technical abilities, encouragement to follow healthy eating, various policies and procedures implemented by JBG, implementation of codes of conduct, transparency in information provided, feedback from external stakeholders, training provision to develop volunteers and older youth in fresh perspectives, organisation of local community events and participation in cross-border events. There is no harm flowing from Purposes B & D With regards to Purpose A - Participation in any sport carries risk of injury. Ice hockey is a speed-based contact sport and even the equipment used can cause injury to players. To mitigate this risk players must wear full regulation kit before being allowed to ice. Each team has a first-aider, first aid kit and a qualified nurse is in attendance during league games at home. JBG support SIH decision to make all teams under 14 non-contact. With regards to Purpose C - There is potential harm flowing from this purpose in that coaches and volunteers are vulnerable and open to allegations. JBG aim to mitigate the risk of harm by having procedures with regards child supervision, ensure appropriate training is implemented and registering all volunteers correctly with IHUK. The charity's beneficiaries of Purpose A are anyone from the age of 14 years residing in UK and/or ROI The charity's beneficiaries of Purposes B & C are members, players, parents, coaches & volunteers. The charity's beneficiaries of Purpose D include volunteers and anyone living in NI/ROI There is no private benefit flowing from Purpose b) and d). With regards to Purpose a) - There may be a perceived private benefit for those players who achieve greater levels of recognition by being selected to play at national/GB levels. However selection is based on ability, is a common feature of sport and deemed incidental and necessary for the overall achievement of this purpose. With regards to Purpose c) - There is potential for private benefit from this purpose as individuals may receive training which they could use outside JBG eg first aid training. Such benefit is incidental and necessary to the achievement of the purpose

What your organisation does

Junior Belfast Giants is an unincorporated association (officially formed in 2007) which offers the only developmental programme for Ice Hockey in Northern Ireland. Our main objective is the advancement of amateur sport via the provision of qualified coaching in a safe and friendly environment. Membership is open to anyone (aged 4 years upwards)

regardless of ability, race, ethnicity, religion, gender and/or sexuality. JBG membership is very diverse attracting both boys and girls from across all communities as well as hosting multi-cultures and nationalities. Our governing body is Ice Hockey UK (IHUK) and we enter teams from U12 upwards to play competitively in the Scottish Ice Hockey League. The club season runs from September to June annually and training sessions take place at Dundonald Ice Bowl. Teams play competitive matches at home (Belfast) and away (Scotland) during season. We also enter teams annually into tournaments in Scotland, ROI (when temporary rinks are available) and more recently Europe (Budapest). The high standard of JBG coaching has also secured players (girls and boys) within various age levels to train and compete at Scottish National Team and Girls GB Team levels. Ice Hockey is the fastest sport which can be played on foot – it requires great skill, co-ordination, physical stamina and mental agility as play can change in an instant. Playing ice hockey as your sport can provide many mental/physical health benefits as well as reinforcing additional skills and attributes which helps children develop into well-rounded adults – concentration, trust, teamwork, responsibility, controlling reaction/emotion/stress and sportsmanship. To learn the game is to love the game – JBG aim to provide children and young people with the facilities to play ice hockey well into adulthood at either a recreational level or as a stepping stone into the professional hockey leagues.
