Public benefits

The first purpose is the provision and management, for the relief and care of elderly persons suffering from the disabilities of old age or otherwise in need, of housing or hostels for letting. The direct benefit flowing from this purpose is that the accommodation provided is designed to meet the needs of older people, including those living with

dementia, and this encourages independence, alleviates social isolation and improves quality of life. The second purpose is provision of housing, accommodation, assistance to help house people and associated facilities and amenities for the prevention or relief of poverty or for those in need by reason of youth, age, ill health, disability, financial hardship or other disadvantage. The direct benefits flowing from this purpose is that through the provision of a variety of types of accommodation and support, Abbeyfield & Wesley : a. enables older people to continue to play an important role amongst their families, friends and in the community; b. helps to overcome loneliness and insecurity; c. through volunteering, enables local people to play an essential part in helping older people in the community. This improves the overall wellbeing of older people. The third purpose is any other charitable object that can be carried out by an Industrial and Provident Society registered as a housing association by the Department including increasing awareness of issues relating to older people, particularly social isolation and living with dementia. The benefits from purpose one can be demonstrated through regular independent evaluation of the services by a variety of bodies such as the Regulation and Quality Improvement Authority, Supporting People, Department for Communities, Centre for Housing Studies Service Excellence Standards. The benefits from purpose two are demonstrated through feedback surveys from residents and residents' families. The benefits from purpose 3 are demonstrated through analysis of housing association community investment activity. There is no harm arising from any of the purposes. The charities beneficiaries are older people (normally aged 55 and above). There is no private benefit flowing from any of the purposes.

The Association's principal activity is the provision of a range of housing support options for older people across Northern Ireland such as supported sheltered houses, sheltered accommodation and care homes.
