Public benefits

The direct benefits flowing from the organisation's purposes are as follows. There will be improved health outcomes and improved medical treatment due to enhanced facilities and equipment. Service will be provided by volunteers, there will be publicity for the work of the hospital following the return of the volunteers to their home countries, and

medical experience will be gained by volunteers during their service. There will be increased support and donations for the hospital, both in Malawi and Northern Ireland. The advancement of religion. Increased support in Northern Ireland for the work of the hospital. Support for the Christian ethos of the hospital will result in encouragement to people in Malawi from the knowledge that they are being prayed for. The benefits can be demonstrated through regular reports from the hospital. The purposes of our charity may lead to the following harm - in providing medical treatment for patients there is a risk of unintended side effects from the drugs however this is rare and the benefit outweighs the harm. We can show that this harm is outweighed by the benefits through supervision by trained medical staff. The purposes of our charity may lead to the following harm - risk of disease or injury to volunteers. We can show that this harm is outweighed by the benefits through training volunteers to avoid disease or injury, and provision of protective equipment such as mosquito nets. The charity's beneficiaries are the inhabitants of the catchment area of the hospital and health centres as defined by the David Gordon Memorial Hospital, Livingstonia in Malawi. There is no private benefit flowing from the purpose.

Charitable purposes

The Association is established to relieve poverty and sickness, to support the Christian ethos of the hospital and to promote the preservation of health of the inhabitants of the catchment area of the hospital and health centres as defined by the David Gordon Memorial Hospital, Livingstonia in Malawi (hereinafter called the “area of benefit”) without distinction of age, gender, disability, sexual orientation, nationality, ethnic identity, political or religious opinion, by associating the statutory authorities, community and voluntary organisations and the inhabitants in a common effort to advance health and wellbeing with the object of improving the conditions of life for the said inhabitants and in particular to: a) Provide funds and equipment in such manner as the Association thinks fit, to supplement the facilities and equipment of the David Gordon Memorial Hospital (the hospital); b) Support the work of the David Gordon Memorial Hospital in Livingstonia by the recruitment, selection and sending out of volunteers from Northern Ireland for service within the area of benefit and any other method the committee may from time to time decide; c) Promote the work of the David Gordon Memorial Hospital in Livingstonia, Malawi in the area of benefit and in Northern Ireland. d) To promote Primary Health Care in the area of benefit. e) To promote prayer for the work of the hospital
