Public benefits
The purpose of Cairde Naíscoil Sliabh gCuillinn is to advance education and training through the medium of the Irish Language for the benefit of the general public in Newry and Mourne and its environs of Northern Ireland and in particular: (a) promote public awareness, knowledge and understanding of the cultural heritage of Ireland, bilingualism,
and the Irish language, and to carry out research into, and promote public awareness of, the social and economic structures of Irish society including the Irish-speaking community; The direct benefits flowing from this purpose include more use of the Irish language, greater interest from local children and in turn families and overall increased respect for the language and culture and part of our national heritage. These benefits can be demonstrated by more users of Irish language in the locality and a stimulus to promote Irish language in schools. Local schools have been making a greater effort to offer the language to children as an additional curricular activity. (b) advance education by carrying out, or assisting in the carrying out of, research into the fields of Irish-medium education, culture, community-work, training, and business, (especially, but not exclusively, among voluntary sector and community-based initiatives and projects) in the area of benefit; The direct benefits flowing from this purpose include greater numbers taking Irish language at second and third level education and also greater use of the language at cultural events in the area. These benefits can be demonstrated by the number of students studying Irish at second level and the offer of support from local students and teachers to support the use of the language from a young age. (c) promote research into the Irish language medium, cultural projects, community work, training and research. The direct benefits flowing from this purpose include some overlap of the above, however building relationships with other Irish medium organisations/schools/cultural groups etc on one hand and also linking in with key stakeholders such as Altram/Comhairle na Gaelscolaoictha and Conradh na Gaeilge all organisations keen to promote and support the language. These benefits can be demonstrated by the established relationships and links in place with other like minded people and groups. This is a network of support and also a vehicle for ongoing development. There is no harm arising from our purposes. The charity's beneficiaries are the local community, schools, children, Irish language groups and advocates. There is no private benefit flowing from the purposes. The organisation is not for profit with a remit solely to promote the Irish language from a young age. Any money generated is for the benefit of further development or to be invested in resources.
... [more] [less]What your organisation does
The organisation does this by organising events in the community, inviting people to join the committee and support the cause, local activity and support for the Irish medium playgroup and linking in with local schools, politicians and other stakeholder organisations. Committee members and trustees volunteer their time to contribute to events and
local Irish speakers help with the promotional and development activities carried out. There is no business element, however from time to time fundraising events are organised or children showcase their talent in the use of the language for parents, teachers, community etc. Overall ongoing outreach and work at a grass roots level is key to achieving the goals set.
