Public benefits

The direct benefits which flow from the charity's purpose to relieve suffering and distress include reduction in symptoms of emotional and mental ill health reducing levels of stress, anxiety, depression and suicidal behaviours increasing levels of wellbeing. Improved coping and decision making skills builds resilience leading to improved health

and social outcomes. Benefits on a wider scale include improved relationships and connectedness at home, in schools, in the workplace and within the local community. The direct benefits which flow from the charitable purpose to advance education include greater mental health awareness and enhanced recognition of symptoms, treatment and sources of support leading to, on a wider scale the reduction in stigma and misconceptions. The promotion of positive mental health strategies within an early intervention model leads to improved health outcomes for the individual and wider community. The benefits from the purpose to relieve suffering and distress can be demonstrated by the pre and post testing of client symptoms with psychometric tools. Clients/ caregivers/ referral agents also complete qualitative feedback questionnaires and provide testimonials. The benefits from the purpose to advance education can be demonstrated through feedback questionnaires, surveys, annual report and through external evaluation of the services provided. In providing counselling to vulnerable persons especially those with suicidal behaviours there is the risk that these behaviours may continue or even escalate and some may complete the act of suicide. However this remains a small risk due to the policies, processes and procedures within the service and the standard of service delivery Aurora adheres too. There is also the risk to self due to the nature of working on a 1-1 basis with vulnerable individuals however this is minimised by policies such as lone working, client drug and alcohol policy and health and safety guidance. In pursuing the above purposes the recording of sensitive material is intrinsic to service delivery therefore there is a risk of harm from a data protection breach. This risk is minimised by strong preventative measures in both manual and computerised filing systems and databases and confidentiality, IT and data protection policies. The charity's beneficiaries are those members of the public living within Derry and the surrounding area who are experiencing emotional and mental health difficulties and for whom attendance at counselling and other relevant therapeutic support services would have a beneficial effect without distinction of age, religion, sex or political opinion. A private benefit flowing from both purposes is that gained by the landlord of Aurora's premises through the refurbishment undertaken by Aurora to ensure a warm, welcoming and pleasant environment for clients. This investment was necessary and reasonable and a long term rental agreement is in place. The self employed counsellors utilised for the furtherance of both purposes may also benefit from the range of work opportunities and environments Aurora can provide therein increasing their therapeutic experience. This may improve their employability or provide a basis for an increase in their chargeable rate as a self employed therapist but this is both incidental and necessary for the charity to achieve its purposes. A further benefit is to employed staff whom benefit from the training provided by the organisation, may increase their employability but is necessary to ensure skills are continuously updated and course costs can be deducted if staff leave within specific timeframe.
