Public benefits
The Trustees believe that all of our purposes satisfy both elements of the public benefit requirement. Purpose One To promote national and international conflict resolution and reconciliation with a view to relieving suffering and distress and building and maintaining social cohesion and trust within and between communities. The direct benefits
which flow from this purpose include an increase in the knowledge and skills required to address conflict, more stable and cohesive societies and better community relations. The benefits should extend beyond direct participants into those they work with and should lead to more reconciled and cohesive societies. Educational resource materials will also be developed and available for use by a wide group of practitioners keen to learn about the most effective ways to promote conflict resolution and reconciliation. The benefits will be demonstrated through regular evaluation and feedback from participants. Purpose Two To promote human rights (in particular the human rights of victims of conflict and forced migration) as set out in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and subsequent United Nations conventions and declarations by all or any of the following means: (a) research into human rights issues; (b) raising awareness of human rights issues; (c) promoting public support for human rights; (d) promoting respect for human rights among individuals and corporations. The direct benefits which flow from this purpose include greater knowledge and awareness about human rights concerns, standards, remedies and mechanisms, and increased public and individual recognition of the importance of respecting human rights. The beneficiaries will include individual citizens and those actively involved in the promotion of human rights. The societies where SCI operates will also benefit through enhancements in the skills and effectiveness of those who work there. The benefits will be demonstrated through regular evaluation and feedback from participants. Purpose Three To promote religious or racial harmony by: (a) promoting knowledge and mutual understanding and respect of the beliefs and practices of different religious faiths; (b) promoting knowledge and mutual understanding between different racial groups. The direct benefits which flow from this purpose include greater knowledge and awareness about the importance of mutual understanding between different religious and racial groups and the role which this plays in building peaceful and cohesive societies. Those influenced by SCI’s work should in turn have an influence on social cohesion in the wider society. The benefits will be demonstrated through regular evaluation and feedback from participants and increased tolerance and understanding in the communities where they work. Purpose Four To advance citizenship or community development by promoting social inclusion. The direct benefits which flow from this purpose include increased awareness about the importance of social inclusion, and increased skills, engagement and activism by individual citizens in building fairer, more inclusive and stable societies which respect human rights, address conflict and promote the inclusion of marginalised and excluded groups. Those more active and skilled citizen will in turn have a wider influence on social cohesion, citizenship and community development in the societies where they live. The benefits will be demonstrated through regular evaluation and feedback from participants, and increased tolerance and understanding in the communities where they work. There is no harm or private benefit from our purposes.

Attached is a short note outlining the key areas of work. A detailed operational plan is being
produced for 2017. The website www.thesocialchangeinitiative.org provides more details on aspects of the work.
