The advancement of religion a) A core benefit is the spiritual, physical and mental well-being of the monks of Holy Cross Monastery, its oblates (associates) and the wider community that is served by the monks of the monastery who conduct and welcome others to the celebration of religious services such as daily Eucharist and regular prayer

The advancement of conflict resolution or reconciliation or the promotion of religious harmony The Charity provides leadership in faith and justice which encourages the wider community to become actively involved in many ecumenical programmes beneficial to society at large. 1. The advancement of religion This benefit is demonstrated a) by the attendance of the public at the religious services in the monastery church, and by the level of requests received by the monastery for prayer and intercession. b) by the popularity of the Guest-house where over 400 people per annum stay overnight or longer. It is also evidenced by their reported sense of well being and renewed life purpose and direction. In the environment of tranquillity provided by the monastery, men and women find space for personal reflection, refocussing and rest, which contributes to their overall well-being. 2.The advancement of conflict resolution or reconciliation or the promotion of religious harmony This benefit is demonstrated by the reality of the number of people, Catholic and Protestant, participating in the worship and cross-community initiatives organized by the monastic community. There is no perceived or reported harm arising from the activities of the Charity. The beneficiaries of the Charity's activities are those members of the public interested in the development of a religious life and spirituality in the Benedictine tradition, be they Catholic or other. Such people tend to be adults as monastic life is a lifestyle suited to adult Christians. The monastery welcomes visitors and guests from all parts of the island of Ireland, Great Britain, Europe and from farther afield. The Charity maintains and supports the monastic community of Holy Cross Monastery. The monastic buildings provide accommodation for the monks present and future. This accommodation is necessary for the achievement of the purpose of the charity as the monks need to live and sustain themselves as a community of prayer, work and hospitality. The private benefit contributes directly towards achieving the Charity's purposes. The private benefit of accommodation is a necessary requirement which enables the Charity to achieve its purposes. The accommodation provides the physical space for the maintenance of the monastic community's public worship and ministry of hospitality.

What your organisation does

The Charity, the Benedictine Congregation of our Lady of Monte Oliveto in Northern Ireland, carries out its purposes by safeguarding and promoting the monastic community known as "Benedictine Monks". It does so by establishing and maintaining the property of Holy Cross Monastery (Rostrevor) wherein the community of Benedictine monks lives a life of

prayer, work and hospitality in accord with the traditional Benedictine vows of obedience, stability and conversion of life. The monks welcome visitors to participate in the prayer and worship of the monastery, and to share in the community's life as guests, either individually or in groups. The monks gather for worship in the monastery church five times a day and people from the locality and beyond participate in these services on a regular basis. Prayer of intercession is a key element of these services offering a spiritual support to the many people who confide their intentions to the monastic community. A webcam link also allows people who are unable to come to the monastery, whether through sickness, disability or distance of travel, to share in the worship. The monks offer pastoral comfort, spiritual guidance and support to those who visit the monastery. A Scripture-based sermon is preached each day, and often made available in written form on the monastery's website. The monks are always available to provide spiritual guidance to those who call to the monastery in times of difficulty, crisis or struggle. The monks also visit individuals and groups in the wider community in times of special need as part of the pastoral work of the Charity.
