Public benefits

The Objectives are the relief of poverty of widows of Freemasons and, or, relatives of Freemasons and Freemasons who are experiencing financial hardship. Also to provide financial assistance to other Charitable purposes as defined in the Charities Act (Northern Ireland) 2008. The direct benefit from the first purpose is less stress to the

individual and improved mental and physical well being. The benefit from the second purpose is increased funds for non-Masonic charities, through organising or supporting the organisation of events. The benefits are demonstrated through feedback information from the annuitants. There is no harm caused by any of the services provided. There is no private benefit flowing from the purposes. The annuitants or beneficiaries are widows of Freemasons, Freemasons and relatives of Freemasons and the general public. There is no private benefit flowing from the purposes.

What your organisation does

We receive the Charitable donations collected at meetings, Installation Dinners and other functions organised by the units attached to this Charity Committee. We recover Gift Aid from HMRC on monies that satisfy the Gift Aid criteria. When making donations, brethren have a choice to nominate the Charity to which their donations should go. A number

of the brethren do specify a Charity of their choice, but there is a large number who do not specify a particular Charity. In such cases, The Charity Committee decide on how the unallocated monies should be distributed based on a percentage basis related to the functions and annuitants supported. The Charity Committee organises an Annual Church Service and an Annual Carol Service, at which collections are taken. Donations are given to the host Church and to Masonic Charities. The Charity Committee invites guest speakers to update and advise the Committee on legislation. Lodge Stewards of Charities and Almoners are invited to presentations to update them on their duties and on legislation, supporting them in completing documentation required by the various Charities , in making application for assistance. We advise on how to conduct home visits, in some cases accompanying them, to identify needs and the best type of support to suggest. The Charity Committee supports the units to hold any additional fund raising events such as Charity breakfasts , table quizzes or Charity walks to raise funds to support non-Masonic Charities such as NI Hospice, TLC and Shine a Light.
