Public benefits

The availability of the cathedral and its associated buildings to the general public greatly enhances the cultural life of the city. The cathedral is open to cross community groups for exhibitions of their artistic and craft work. The increase in musical events in the building offers an opportunity to the public to see performances by musicians of

international standing. Exhibitions on the history of the building and the personalities associated with it provide an educational function. Major exhibitions in 2014 on the Great War,in 2015 on Gallipoli and in 2016 on the Somme Campaign showed the City's contribution and involvement in those events and led to a greater understanding of the cross community involvement in them. The Great War theme will be continued wit a series of exhibitions in 2017 and 2018. Lectures on aspects of Irish and local history provide an educational benefit. The increase in visitors has led to enhanced permanent displays in the building The steady increase in visitors to the building to numbers approaching 90,000 per annum demonstrates the level of interest in what is offered. International tour group visits and requests by international choirs to use the building are evidence of this. The is no private benefit flowing from the purpose. Beneficiaries are members of the public. Tourists from the UK, Ireland, Europe, United States, - Worldwide. Visiting artistes, choirs, conference organisers are among the beneficiaries. What your organisation does

The Friends of St. Columb's Cathedral supports the Dean & Chapter in the many activities, both cultural and religious that are organised by the Cathedral. These include musical recitals, exhibitions of art and historical artifacts, lectures, choral events, cross community events, fund raising for specific projects & production of tourist

information brochures. The Friends manage the application for the Cathedral tourism development funding which is received annually from Derry City & Strabane District Council. The Cathedral, is the City's oldest and most historical building and receives about 90,000 visitors each year and many events are organised to assist visitors to appreciate the history and ethos of the building. The Friends assist with these by volunteering to help at them and by providing financial support in addition to that received from the Council. support is also given to young music scholars, by providing training opportunities for them with professional musicians. financial assistance is also given towards the cost of fabric repairs and restoration. Tourist and event advertising and publicity costs are largely supported by the Friends. Membership is open to all and the Friends are committed to equality and diversity. The Cathedral has a long tradition of organising cultural, artistic and musical events and these are an increasing feature in its role in civic life. The building is primarily a place of worship but is also a major venue in the city for all types of cultural events.
