Public benefits
BENEFICIARIES The Charity’s beneficiaries are primarily the public of Northern Ireland together with those members of the public from outside Northern Ireland who wish to be involved in the activities organised by the Charity. OBJECT 1. The benefit that flows from this purpose is the promotion of enjoyment, better understanding and general
advancement of Arts and Culture, particularly North American music and culture primarily for the benefit of the general public in Northern Ireland through exposure to, and participation in, as audience member or physical participant, any concerts, performances or events organised by the charity. These benefits are evidenced through regular internal and external qualitative assessment; regular collation of quantitative data on charitable activities, audiences and participation; photo and video documentation; regular reporting of charitable activities and financial performance in annual reports, audited annual accounts, and reports to grant funders. OBJECT 2. The public benefit that would flow from this purpose would be the creation of work placement opportunities and training; the availability of public discussions, workshops and the like leading to increased social awareness and life skills through physical participation. The public would be encouraged to create and take part in their own interpretations of the music either by creating their own lyrics, accompaniments or plays. The beneficiaries would be encouraged to promote and stage their own creations, including practical participation, leading to a greater understanding and appreciation of the role and influence of Scotch/Irish music in America and of the influence of the American music as it migrated back to the Old World. The benefits will be evidenced in records kept by the charity and other appropriate agencies of work placements and other training opportunities held or organised by the charity including numbers of participants; qualifications obtained or training courses attended. OBJECT 3. The direct benefits that flow from this purpose would be the breaking down of barriers between members of the public created by their political, cultural, religious and ethnic origins resulting in better understanding of their shared history thus leading to a more stable and mature society. These benefits would be evidenced through the collection and collation of data obtained from the various participants involved in purposes 1 and 2 above and the independent collection and collation of data obtained from the public generally. There is no harm flowing from any of these Objects. The proposed festival and events will benefit local musicians, music businesses, hotels, restaurants and other businesses. In addition, a director will benefit from providing services as a music promoter. This private benefit contributes to the organisation’s purposes as the knowledge, expertise and experience of the director concerned is such that their involvement in their private capacity is essential to the success of this project.

These objects provide public benefits in the form of open access to an annual music festival and other events celebrating the historic musical links between Northern Ireland (and Scotland) and North America, advancing education and understanding of these links through workshops, discussions, seminars and other means of education. The musical links
which are central to our purpose stem from both the Irish and Ulster - Scots traditions - our activities will celebrate music diversity and facilitate cultural exchange, thereby supporting better community relations. Our activities will initially be County Down - based, but we will be pursuing the options for future activities on a wider geographical basis e.g. possible links to a North West festival and to partners in the Republic of Ireland. Our intention is to secure public funding which will enable ticket prices to be kept to a minimum, thereby opening up access to all sections of the public. There is also the possibility of a reciprocal Festival being organised in conjunction with the City Council of Armstrong, British Columbia, Canada.
